Anuruddhasutta With Anuruddha Anuruddhasutta

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā anuruddho kosalesu viharati aƱƱatarasmiṁ vanasaį¹‡įøe. At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove. On one occasion the Venerable Anuruddha was dwelling among the Kosalans in a certain woodland thicket.

Atha kho aƱƱatarā tāvatiṁsakāyikā devatā jālinÄ« nāma āyasmato anuruddhassa purāṇadutiyikā yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then a certain deity of the company of the thirty-three named Penelope had been Anuruddha’s partner in a former life. She went up to Anuruddha, and recited these verses: Then a certain devatā of the Tāvatiṃsa host named JālinÄ«, a former consort of the Venerable Anuruddha, approached him and addressed him in verse

ā€œTattha cittaṁ paṇidhehi, ā€œSet your heart there, Direct your mind there [to that realm]

yattha te vusitaṁ pure; where you used to live: Where you dwelt in the past

Tāvatiṁsesu devesu, among the gods of the thirty-three, Among the Tāvatiṃsa devas

sabbakāmasamiddhisu; whose every desire is granted! For whom all desires are fulfilled.

Purakkhato parivuto, At the fore of a retinue You will shine forth highly honoured,

devakaƱƱāhi sobhasÄ«ā€ti. of divine maidens, you’ll shine!ā€ Surrounded by celestial maidens.ā€

ā€œDuggatā devakaƱƱāyo, ā€œDivine maidens are in a sorry state, ā€œMiserable are celestial maidens,

sakkāyasmiṁ patiṭṭhitā; stuck in substantial reality. Established in identity;

Te cāpi duggatā sattā, And those beings too are in a sorry state, And miserable too are those beings,

devakaƱƱāhi patthitÄā€ti. who are attached to divine maidens.ā€ Attached to celestial maidens.ā€

ā€œNa te sukhaṁ pajānanti, ā€œThey don’t know pleasure ā€œThey do not know bliss

ye na passanti nandanaṁ; who don’t see the Garden of Delight! Who have not seen Nandana,

Āvāsaṁ naradevānaṁ, It’s the abode of lordly gods, The abode of the glorious male devas

tidasānaṁ yasassinanā€ti. the glorious host of Thirty!ā€ Belonging to the host of Thirty.ā€

ā€œNa tvaṁ bāle vijānāsi, ā€œFool, don’t you understand ā€œDon’t you know, you fool,

yathā arahataṁ vaco; the saying of the perfected ones: That maxim of the arahants?

Aniccā sabbasaį¹…khārā, all conditions are impermanent, Impermanent are all formations;

uppādavayadhammino; their nature is to rise and fall; Their nature is to arise and vanish.

Uppajjitvā nirujjhanti, having arisen, they cease; Having arisen, they cease:

tesaṁ vūpasamo sukho. their stilling is such bliss. Their appeasement is blissful.

Natthi dāni punāvāso, O Penelope, weaver of the webā€”ā€œNow I will never again dwell

devakāyasmi jālini; there are no more abodes for me in the host of gods. Among the deva host, Jālinī!

Vikkhīṇo jātisaṁsāro, Transmigration through births is finished, The wandering on in birth is ended:

natthi dāni punabbhavoā€ti. now there’ll be no more future lives.ā€ Now there is no more renewed existence.ā€
