Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā āBhikkhus!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied. āVenerable sir!ā those bhikkhus replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:
āCatÅ«hi, bhikkhave, aį¹
gehi samannÄgatÄ vÄcÄ subhÄsitÄ hoti, no dubbhÄsitÄ; anavajjÄ ca ananuvajjÄ ca viĆ±Ć±Å«naį¹. āMendicants, speech that has four factors is well spoken, not poorly spoken. Itās blameless and is not criticized by sensible people. āBhikkhus, when speech possesses four factors, then it is well spoken, not badly spoken, and it is blameless, not blameworthy among the wise.
Katamehi catūhi? What four? What four?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu subhÄsitaį¹yeva bhÄsati no dubbhÄsitaį¹, dhammaį¹yeva bhÄsati no adhammaį¹, piyaį¹yeva bhÄsati no appiyaį¹, saccaį¹yeva bhÄsati no alikaį¹. Itās when a mendicant speaks well, not poorly; their speech is principled, not unprincipled; they speak pleasantly, not unpleasantly; and they speak truthfully, not falsely. Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu speaks only what is well spoken, not what is badly spoken. He speaks only on the Dhamma, not on non-Dhamma. He speaks only what is pleasant, not what is unpleasant. He speaks only what is true, not what is false.
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catÅ«hi aį¹
gehi samannÄgatÄ vÄcÄ subhÄsitÄ hoti, no dubbhÄsitÄ, anavajjÄ ca ananuvajjÄ ca viĆ±Ć±Å«nanāti. Speech with these four factors is well spoken, not poorly spoken. Itās blameless and is not criticized by sensible people.ā When speech possesses these four factors, it is well spoken, not badly spoken, and it is blameless, not blameworthy among the wise.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said. This is what the Blessed One said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say: Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:
āSubhÄsitaį¹ uttamamÄhu santo, āGood people say well-spoken words are foremost; āWhat is well spoken, the good say, is foremost;
Dhammaį¹ bhaį¹e nÄdhammaį¹ taį¹ dutiyaį¹; second, speech ought be principled, not unprincipled; Second, speak Dhamma, not non-Dhamma;
Piyaį¹ bhaį¹e nÄppiyaį¹ taį¹ tatiyaį¹, third, speak pleasantly, not unpleasantly; Third, speak what is pleasant, not unpleasant;
Saccaį¹ bhaį¹e nÄlikaį¹ taį¹ catutthanāti. and fourth, speak truthfully, not falsely.ā Fourth, speak the truth, not falsehood.ā

gÄ«so uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ ekaį¹saį¹ uttarÄsaį¹
gaį¹ karitvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹ÄmetvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Vaį¹
gÄ«sa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said, Then the Venerable Vaį¹
gīsa rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, raising his joined hands in reverential salutation towards the Blessed One, said to him:
āpaį¹ibhÄti maį¹, bhagavÄ, paį¹ibhÄti maį¹, sugatÄāti. āI feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!ā āAn inspiration has come to me, Blessed One! An inspiration has come to me, Fortunate One!ā
āPaį¹ibhÄtu taį¹, vaį¹
gÄ«sÄāti bhagavÄ avoca. āThen speak as you feel inspired,ā said the Buddha. The Blessed One said: āThen express your inspiration, Vaį¹
gÄ«sa.ā
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ vaį¹
gÄ«so bhagavantaį¹ sammukhÄ sÄruppÄhi gÄthÄhi abhitthavi: Then Vaį¹
gÄ«sa extolled the Buddha in his presence with fitting verses: Then the Venerable Vaį¹
gīsa extolled the Blessed One to his face with suitable verses
āTameva vÄcaį¹ bhÄseyya, āSpeak only such words āOne should utter only such speech
yÄyattÄnaį¹ na tÄpaye; as do not hurt yourself By which one does not afflict oneself
Pare ca na vihiį¹seyya, nor harm others; Nor cause harm to others:
sÄ ve vÄcÄ subhÄsitÄ. such speech is truly well spoken. Such speech is truly well spoken.
PiyavÄcaį¹va bhÄseyya, Speak only pleasing words, āOne should utter only pleasant speech,
yÄ vÄcÄ paį¹inanditÄ; words gladly welcomed. Speech that is gladly welcomed.
Yaį¹ anÄdÄya pÄpÄni, Pleasing words are those When it brings them nothing evil
paresaį¹ bhÄsate piyaį¹. that bring nothing bad to others. What one speaks is pleasant to others.
Saccaį¹ ve amatÄ vÄcÄ, Truth itself is undying speech: āTruth, indeed, is deathless speech:
esa dhammo sanantano; this is an ancient teaching. This is an ancient principle.
Sacce atthe ca dhamme ca, Good people say the teaching and meaning The goal and the Dhamma, the good say,
Ähu santo patiį¹į¹hitÄ. are grounded in truth. Are established upon truth.
Yaį¹ buddho bhÄsate vÄcaį¹, The words spoken by the Buddha āThe secure speech which the Buddha utters
khemaį¹ nibbÄnapattiyÄ; for finding the sanctuary, extinguishment, For the attainment of NibbÄna,
DukkhassantakiriyÄya, for making an end of suffering: For making an end to suffering
sÄ ve vÄcÄnamuttamÄāti. this really is the best kind of speech.ā Is truly the foremost speech.
