Bhikkhakasutta An Almsman The Mendicant

Atha kho bhikkhako brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a brahmin almsman went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then a mendicant brahmin approached the Blessed One
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho bhikkhako brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha, ā¦ and said to him:
āahampi kho, bho gotama, bhikkhako, bhavampi bhikkhako, idha no kiį¹ nÄnÄkaraį¹anāti? āWorthy Gotama, both you and I are almsmen. What, then, is the difference between us?ā Master Gotama, I am a mendicant and you are a mendicant. What is the difference between us in this respect?
āNa tena bhikkhako hoti, āYou donāt become an almsman [The Blessed One: ] āIt is not thus that one becomes a mendicant,
yÄvatÄ bhikkhate pare; just by begging alms from others. Just because one begs others for alms.
Vissaį¹ dhammaį¹ samÄdÄya, One who has undertaken domestic duties If one has taken up a domestic practice,
bhikkhu hoti na tÄvatÄ. has not yet become a mendicant. One still has not become a bhikkhu.
Yodha puƱƱaƱca pÄpaƱca, But one living a spiritual life āBut Having expelled merit and evil,
bÄhitvÄ brahmacariyaį¹; who has banished both merit and evil, and one leads the holy life,
Saį¹
khÄya loke carati, and wanders having appraised the world, Who fares in the world with comprehension:
sa ve bhikkhÅ«ti vuccatÄ«āti. is said to be a mendicant.ā He is truly called a bhikkhu.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, bhikkhako brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin almsman said to the Buddha, When this was said, the mendicant brahmin said to the Blessed One:
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā¦ āMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
