Paccanīkasutta The Contraphile

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Sāvatthī.

Tena kho pana samayena paccanÄ«kasāto nāma brāhmaṇo sāvatthiyaṁ paį¹­ivasati. Now at that time a brahmin named Contraphile, who loved contradiction, was residing in SāvatthÄ«. Now on that occasion a brahmin named PaccanÄ«kasāta, Relisher of Contradiction, was residing at SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho paccanÄ«kasātassa brāhmaṇassa etadahosi: Then Contraphile thought, Then it occurred to the brahmin PaccanÄ«kasāta:

ā€œyannÅ«nāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaį¹…kameyyaṁ. ā€œWhy don’t I go to the ascetic Gotama and ā€œLet me approach the ascetic Gotama

Yaṁ yadeva samaṇo gotamo bhāsissati taṁ tadevassāhaṁ paccanÄ«kāssanā€ti. contradict everything he says?ā€ and contradict whatever he says.ā€

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā abbhokāse caį¹…kamati. At that time the Buddha was walking mindfully in the open air. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was walking back and forth in the open.

Atha kho paccanÄ«kasāto brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ caį¹…kamantaṁ etadavoca: Then the brahmin Contraphile went up to the Buddha, and said to him as he was walking, Then the brahmin PaccanÄ«kasāta approached the Blessed One and said to him while he was walking back and forth:

ā€œbhaṇa samaṇadhammanā€ti. ā€œAscetic, preach the Dhamma.ā€ ā€œSpeak Dhamma, ascetic!ā€

ā€œNa paccanÄ«kasātena, ā€œFine words aren’t easy to understand ā€œWell-spoken counsel is hard to understand

suvijānaṁ subhāsitaṁ; by a lover of contradiction, By one who relishes contradiction,

Upakkiliį¹­į¹­hacittena, whose mind is tainted By one with a corrupt mind

sārambhabahulena ca. and full of aggression. Who is engrossed in aggression.

Yo ca vineyya sārambhaṁ, But when you’ve dispelled aggression, ā€œBut if one has removed aggression

appasādaƱca cetaso; and your suspicious mind, And the distrust of one’s heart,

Āghātaṁ paį¹­inissajja, and you’ve got rid of resentment, If one has cast away aversion,

sa ve jaƱƱā subhāsitanā€ti. then you’ll understand fine words.ā€ One can understand well-spoken counsel.ā€

Evaṁ vutte, paccanÄ«kasāto brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Contraphile said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin PaccanÄ«kasāta said to the Blessed One:

ā€œabhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! … ā€œMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama!…

upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€ Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who from today has gone for refuge for life.
