Ahiṁsakasutta Harmless Ahiṃsaka

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Then the brahmin Ahiṃsaka Bhāradvāja, Bhāradvāja the Harmless, approached the Blessed One and exchanged greetings with him. When they had concluded their greetings and cordial talk,

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said, he sat down to one side and said to the Blessed One:

ā€œahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotama, ahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotamÄā€ti. ā€œI am Harmless, worthy Gotama, I am Harmless!ā€ ā€œI am Ahiṃsaka the Harmless, Master Gotama. I am Ahiṃsaka the Harmless, Master Gotama. ā€

ā€œYathā nāmaṁ tathā cassa, ā€œIf you were really like your name, [The Blessed One: ] ā€œIf one were as one’s name implies

siyā kho tvaṁ ahiṁsako; then you’d be Harmless. You would be a harmless one.

Yo ca kāyena vācāya, But a truly harmless person By body, speech,

manasā ca na hiṁsati; does no harm by way of But it is one who does no harm at all or mind,

Sa ve ahiṁsako hoti, body, speech, or mind; Who really is a harmless one

yo paraṁ na vihiṁsatÄ«ā€ti. they don’t harm anyone else.ā€ As he does not harm others. ā€

Evaṁ vutte, ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless said to the Buddha, When this was said, the brahmin Ahiṃsaka Bhāradvāja said to the Blessed One:

ā€œabhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā€¦ā€ … ā€œMagnificent, Master Gotama!… ā€

abbhaƱƱāsi.

Aññataro ca panāyasmā ahiṁsakabhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti. And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Harmless became one of the perfected. And the Venerable Ahiṃsaka Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
