Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard. Thus have I heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati sappinÄ«tÄ«re. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the bank of the Serpentine river. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at RÄjagaha on the bank of the river SappinÄ«.
Atha kho brahmÄ sanaį¹
kumÄro abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹o kevalakappaį¹ sappinÄ«tÄ«raį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Then, late at night, the glorious divinity Sanaį¹
kumÄra, lighting up the entire Serpentine riverbank, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Then, when the night had advanced, BrahmÄ Sanaį¹
kumÄra, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire bank of the river SappinÄ«, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side.
Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho brahmÄ sanaį¹
kumÄro bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: and recited this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Standing to one side, he recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
āKhattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiį¹, āThe aristocrat is best among people āThe khattiya is the best among people
ye gottapaį¹isÄrino; who take clan as the standard. For those whose standard is the clan,
VijjÄcaraį¹asampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct
so seį¹į¹ho devamÄnuseāti. is best among gods and humans.ā Is best among devas and humans. ā
Idamavoca brahmÄ sanaį¹
kumÄro. Thatās what the divinity Sanaį¹
kumÄra said, This is what BrahmÄ Sanaį¹
kumÄra said.
SamanuƱƱo satthÄ ahosi. and the teacher approved. The Teacher approved.
Atha kho brahmÄ sanaį¹
kumÄro āsamanuƱƱo me satthÄāti bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then the divinity Sanaį¹
kumÄra, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there. Then BrahmÄ Sanaį¹
kumÄra, thinking, āThe Teacher has approved of me, ā paid homage to the Blessed One and, keeping him on his right, he disappeared right there.
