Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ divÄvihÄragato hoti paį¹isallÄ«no. Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the dayās meditation.
Atha kho subrahmÄ ca paccekabrahmÄ suddhÄvÄso ca paccekabrahmÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ paccekaį¹ dvÄrabÄhaį¹ nissÄya aį¹į¹haį¹su. Then the independent divinities SubrahmÄ and SuddhÄvÄsa went to the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post.
Atha kho suddhÄvÄso paccekabrahmÄ katamodakatissakaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ärabbha bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: Then SuddhÄvÄsa recited this verse about the mendicant Katamorakatissaka in the Buddhaās presence: Then, referring to the bhikkhu Katamorakatissaka, the independent brahmÄ SuddhÄvÄsa recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
āAppameyyaį¹ paminanto, āWhat wise person here would judge An immeasurable one by taking his measure?
Kodha vidvÄ vikappaye; the immeasurable by measuring them? āWhat wise man here would seek to define
Appameyyaį¹ pamÄyinaį¹, I think anyone whoād do such a thing He who would measure an immeasurable one
Nivutaį¹ taį¹ maƱƱe akissavanāti. is an ignoramus, shrouded in darkness.ā Must be, I think, an obstructed moron. ā
