Uppalavaṇṇāsutta With Uppalavaṇṇā Uppalavaṇṇā

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Sāvatthī.

Atha kho uppalavaṇṇā bhikkhunÄ« pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā …pe… Then the nun Uppalavaṇṇā robed up in the morning … Then, in the morning, the bhikkhunÄ« Uppalavaṇṇā dressed …

aññatarasmiṁ supupphitasālarukkhamūle aṭṭhāsi. and stood at the root of a sal tree in full flower. she stood at the foot of a sal tree in full flower.

Atha kho māro pāpimā uppalavaṇṇāya bhikkhuniyā bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁsaṁ uppādetukāmo samādhimhā cāvetukāmo yena uppalavaṇṇā bhikkhunÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā uppalavaṇṇaṁ bhikkhuniṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Māra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun Uppalavaṇṇā feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make her fall away from immersion, went up to her and addressed her in verse: Then Māra the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhunÄ« Uppalavaṇṇā, desiring to make her fall away from concentration, approached her and addressed her in verse:

ā€œSupupphitaggaṁ upagamma bhikkhuni, ā€œYou’ve come to this sal tree all crowned with flowers, ā€œHaving gone to a sal tree with flowering top, bhikkhunÄ«,

Ekā tuvaṁ tiṭṭhasi sālamūle; and stand at its root all alone, O nun. You stand at its foot all alone.

Na catthi te dutiyā vaṇṇadhātu, Your beauty is second to none— There is none whose beauty rivals yours:

Bāle na tvaṁ bhāyasi dhuttakānanā€ti. silly girl, aren’t you afraid of rascals?ā€ Foolish girl, aren’t you afraid of rogues?ā€

Atha kho uppalavaṇṇāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi: Then the nun Uppalavaṇṇā thought, Then it occurred to the bhikkhunÄ« Uppalavaṇṇā:

ā€œko nu khvāyaṁ manusso vā amanusso vā gāthaṁ bhāsatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWho’s speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?ā€ ā€œNow who is this… ?

Atha kho uppalavaṇṇāya bhikkhuniyā etadahosi: Then she thought,

ā€œmāro kho ayaṁ pāpimā mama bhayaṁ chambhitattaṁ lomahaṁsaṁ uppādetukāmo samādhimhā cāvetukāmo gāthaṁ bhāsatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThis is Māra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, wanting to make me fall away from immersion!ā€ This is Māra the Evil One … desiring to make me fall away from concentration. ā€

Atha kho uppalavaṇṇā bhikkhunÄ« ā€œmāro ayaṁ pāpimÄā€ iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāhi paccabhāsi: Then Uppalavaṇṇā, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse: Then the bhikkhunÄ« Uppalavaṇṇā, having understood, ā€œThis is Māra the Evil One, ā€ replied to him in verses:

ā€œSataṁ sahassānipi dhuttakānaṁ, ā€œEven if 100,000 rascals like you ā€œThough a hundred thousand rogues

Idhāgatā tādisakā bhaveyyuṁ; were to come here, Just like you might come here,

Lomaṁ na iƱjāmi na santasāmi, I’d stir not a hair nor panic. I stir not a hair, I feel no terror;

Na māra bhāyāmi tamekikāpi. I’m not scared of you, Māra, even alone. Even alone, Māra, I don’t fear you.

Esā antaradhāyāmi, I’ll vanish, ā€œI can make myself disappear

kucchiṁ vā pavisāmi te; or I’ll enter your belly; Or I can enter inside your belly.

Pakhumantarikāyampi, I could stand between your eyebrows I can stand between your eyebrows

tiį¹­į¹­hantiṁ maṁ na dakkhasi. and you still wouldn’t see me. Yet you won’t catch a glimpse of me.

Cittasmiṁ vasÄ«bhÅ«tāmhi, I’m the master of my own mind, ā€œI am the master of my mind,

iddhipādā subhāvitā; I’ve developed the bases of psychic power well. The bases of power are well developed;

Sabbabandhanamuttāmhi, I’m free from all bonds, I am freed from all bondage,

na taṁ bhāyāmi āvusoā€ti. and I’m not afraid of you, sir!ā€ Therefore I don’t fear you, friend. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maṁ uppalavaṇṇā bhikkhunÄ«ā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe nun Uppalavaṇṇā knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, ā€œThe bhikkhunÄ« Uppalavaṇṇā knows me, ā€ sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
