ChaphassÄyatanasutta The Six Fields of Contact Six Bases for Contact
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at VesÄlÄ« in the Great Wood in the Hall with the Peaked Roof.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ channaį¹ phassÄyatanÄnaį¹ upÄdÄya bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti. Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk concerning the six bases for contact.
Te ca bhikkhÅ« aį¹į¹hiį¹ katvÄ manasi katvÄ sabbacetasÄ samannÄharitvÄ ohitasotÄ dhammaį¹ suį¹anti. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. And those bhikkhus were listening to the Dhamma with eager ears, attending to it as a matter of vital concern, applying their whole minds to it.
Atha kho mÄrassa pÄpimato etadahosi: Then MÄra thought, Then it occurred to MÄra the Evil One:
āayaį¹ kho samaį¹o gotamo channaį¹ phassÄyatanÄnaį¹ upÄdÄya bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sappahaį¹seti. āThis ascetic Gotama is educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact. āThis ascetic Gotama is instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus ā¦
Te ca bhikkhÅ« aį¹į¹hiį¹ katvÄ manasi katvÄ sabbacetasÄ samannÄharitvÄ ohitasotÄ dhammaį¹ suį¹anti. And those mendicants are paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. who are applying their whole minds to it.
YannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena samaį¹o gotamo tenupasaį¹
kameyyaį¹ vicakkhukammÄyÄāti. Why donāt I go and pull the wool over their eyes?ā Let me approach the ascetic Gotama in order to confound them. ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavato avidÅ«re mahantaį¹ bhayabheravaį¹ saddamakÄsi, apissudaį¹ pathavÄ« maƱƱe undrÄ«yati. Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu aƱƱataraį¹ bhikkhuį¹ etadavoca: Then MÄra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and made a terrifyingly loud noise close by him. It seemed as if the earth were shattering, so that one of the mendicants said to another, Then MÄra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and, not far from him, made a loud noise, frightful and terrifying, as though the earth were splitting open. Then one bhikkhu said to another:
ābhikkhu bhikkhu, esÄ pathavÄ« maƱƱe undrÄ«yatÄ«āti. āMendicant, mendicant, it seems like the earth is shattering!ā āBhikkhu, bhikkhu! It seems as though the earth is splitting open. ā
Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavÄ taį¹ bhikkhuį¹ etadavoca: When this was said, the Buddha said to that mendicant, When this was said, the Blessed One said to that bhikkhu:
ānesÄ, bhikkhu, pathavÄ« undrÄ«yati. āMendicant, thatās not the earth shattering. āThe earth is not splitting open, bhikkhu.
MÄro eso pÄpimÄ tumhÄkaį¹ vicakkhukammÄya Ägatoāti. Thatās MÄra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes!ā That is MÄra the Evil One, who has come here in order to confound you. ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ āmÄro ayaį¹ pÄpimÄā iti viditvÄ mÄraį¹ pÄpimantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then the Buddha, knowing that this was MÄra the Wicked, addressed him in verse: Then the Blessed One, having understood, āThis is MÄra the Evil One, ā addressed MÄra the Evil One in verses:
āRÅ«pÄ saddÄ rasÄ gandhÄ, āSights, sounds, tastes, smells, āForms, sounds, tastes, odours,
phassÄ dhammÄ ca kevalÄ; touches, and ideas, the lot of themāTactiles, and all mental objects:
Etaį¹ lokÄmisaį¹ ghoraį¹, this is the terrible bait This is the terrible bait of the world
ettha loko vimucchito. that the worldās infatuated by. With which the world is infatuated.
EtaƱca samatikkamma, But a mindful disciple of the Buddha āBut when he has transcended this,
sato buddhassa sÄvako; has transcended all that. The mindful disciple of the Buddha
MÄradheyyaį¹ atikkamma, Having slipped free of MÄraās dominion, Having surmounted MÄraās realm,
Ädiccova virocatÄ«āti. they shine like the sun.ā Shines radiantly like the sun.ā
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ā¦peā¦ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra ā¦ vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One ā¦ disappeared right there.
