PÄsÄį¹asutta Boulders The Boulder
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at RÄjagaha on Mount Vulture Peak.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ rattandhakÄratimisÄyaį¹ abbhokÄse nisinno hoti, devo ca ekamekaį¹ phusÄyati. Now at that time the Buddha was meditating in the open during the dark of night, while a gentle rain drizzled down. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was sitting out in the open in the thick darkness of the night while it was drizzling.
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ bhagavato bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavato avidÅ«re mahante pÄsÄį¹e padÄlesi. Then MÄra the Wicked, wanting to make the Buddha feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, approached him, and crushed some large boulders close by him. Then MÄra the Evil One, wishing to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the Blessed One, shattered a number of huge boulders not far away from him.
Atha kho bhagavÄ āmÄro ayaį¹ pÄpimÄā iti viditvÄ mÄraį¹ pÄpimantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Then the Buddha, knowing that this was MÄra the Wicked, addressed him in verse: Then the Blessed One, having understood, āThis is MÄra the Evil One, ā addressed MÄra the Evil One in verse:
āSacepi kevalaį¹ sabbaį¹, āEven if you shake āEven if, all over in its entirety,
gijjhakÅ«į¹aį¹ calessasi; this entire Vultureās Peak, you make this Vulture Peak quake,
Neva sammÄvimuttÄnaį¹, the rightly released, Those fully liberated,
buddhÄnaį¹ atthi iƱjitanāti. the awakened, are unshaken.ā The enlightened are not perturbed,
Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ bhagavÄ, jÄnÄti maį¹ sugatoāti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti. Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Then MÄra the Evil One, realizing, āThe Blessed One knows me, the Fortunate One knows me, ā sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.
