Paį¹hamamārapāsasutta Māra’s Snares (1st) Māra’s Snare

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard. Thus have I heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṁ viharati isipatane migadāye. At one time the Buddha was staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at BārāṇasÄ« in the Deer Park at Isipatana.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:

ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti. ā€œMendicants!ā€ ā€œBhikkhus!ā€

ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œVenerable sir!ā€ those bhikkhus replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:

ā€œMayhaṁ kho, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikārā yoniso sammappadhānā anuttarā vimutti anuppattā, anuttarā vimutti sacchikatā. ā€œMendicants, I have attained and realized supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort. ā€œBhikkhus, by careful attention, by careful right striving, I have arrived at unsurpassed liberation, I have realized unsurpassed liberation.

Tumhepi, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikārā yoniso sammappadhānā anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ anupāpuṇātha, anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ sacchikarothāā€ti. You too should attain and realize supreme freedom through rational application of mind and rational right effort.ā€ You too, bhikkhus, by careful attention, by careful right striving, must arrive at unsurpassed liberation, must realize unsurpassed liberation. ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:

ā€œBaddhosi mārapāsena, ā€œYou’re bound by Māra’s snares, ā€œYou are bound by Māra’s snare

ye dibbā ye ca mānusā; both human and heavenly. Both celestial and human;

Mārabandhanabaddhosi, You’re bound by Māra’s bonds: You are bound by Māra’s bondage:

na me samaṇa mokkhasÄ«ā€ti. you won’t escape me, ascetic!ā€ You won’t escape me, ascetic!ā€

ā€œMuttāhaṁ mārapāsena, ā€œI’m freed from Māra’s snares, ā€œI am freed from Māra’s snare

Ye dibbā ye ca mānusā; both human and heavenly. Both celestial and human;

Mārabandhanamuttomhi, I’m freed from Māra’s bonds. I am freed from Māra’s bondage:

Nihato tvamasi antakāā€ti. You’re beaten, terminator!ā€ You’re defeated, End-maker!ā€

Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then Māra … vanished right there. Then Māra the Evil One … disappeared right there.
