Mallikāsutta A Daughter Daughter

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat down to one side.

Atha kho aƱƱataro puriso yena rājā pasenadi kosalo tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā raƱƱo pasenadissa kosalassa upakaṇṇake ārocesi: Then a man went up to the king and whispered in his ear, Then a certain man approached King Pasenadi and informed him in a whisper:

ā€œmallikā, deva, devÄ« dhÄ«taraṁ vijātÄā€ti. ā€œYour Majesty, Queen Mallikā has given birth to a daughter.ā€ ā€œSire, Queen MallikaĢ„ has given birth to a daughter. ā€

Evaṁ vutte, rājā pasenadi kosalo anattamano ahosi. When this was said, King Pasenadi was disappointed. When this was said, King Pasenadi was displeased.

Atha kho bhagavā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ anattamanataṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi: Then, knowing that King Pasenadi was disappointed, on that occasion the Buddha recited these verses: Then the Blessed One, having understood that King Pasenadi was displeased, on that occasion recited these verses:

ā€œItthÄ«pi hi ekacciyā, ā€œWell, some women are better than men, ā€œA woman, O lord of the people,

seyyā posa janādhipa; O ruler of the people. May turn out better than a man:

Medhāvinī sīlavatī, Wise and virtuous, a devoted wife She may be wise and virtuous,

sassudevā patibbatā. whose mother-in-law is her queen. A devoted wife, revering her mother-in-law.

Tassā yo jāyati poso, And when she has a son, ā€œThe son to whom she gives birth

sūro hoti disampati; he becomes a hero, O lord of the land. May become a hero, O lord of the land.

Tādisā subhagiyā putto, The son of such a blessed lady The son of such a blessed woman

rajjampi anusāsatÄ«ā€ti. may even rule the realm.ā€ May even rule the realm. ā€
