Khemasutta With Khema Khema
Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho khemo devaputto bhagavato santike imÄ gÄthÄyo abhÄsi: Standing to one side, the godling Khema recited these verses in the Buddhaās presence: Standing to one side, the young deva Khema recited these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:
āCaranti bÄlÄ dummedhÄ, āFools and simpletons behave āFoolish people devoid of wisdom
amitteneva attanÄ; like their own worst enemies, Behave like enemies towards themselves.
KarontÄ pÄpakaį¹ kammaį¹, doing wicked deeds They go about doing evil deeds
yaį¹ hoti kaį¹ukapphalaį¹. that ripen as bitter fruit. Which yield only bitter fruit.

yaį¹ katvÄ anutappati; that plagues you later on, Which, having been done, is then repented,
Yassa assumukho rodaį¹, for which you weep and wail, The result of which one experiences

TaƱca kammaį¹ kataį¹ sÄdhu, It is good to do a deed āBut that deed is well performed
yaį¹ katvÄ nÄnutappati; that doesnāt plague you later on, Which, having been done, is not repented,
Yassa patīto sumano, that gladdens and cheers, The result of which one experiences
vipÄkaį¹ paį¹isevati. as its effect stays with you.ā Joyfully with a happy mind.
Paį¹ikacceva taį¹ kayirÄ, āAs a precaution, you should do ā[The Blessed One: ] āOne should promptly do the deed
