Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho mÄgadho devaputto bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi: Standing to one side, the godling Maghada addressed the Buddha in verse: Standing to one side, the young deva MaĢgadha addressed the Blessed One in verse:
āKati lokasmiį¹ pajjotÄ, āHow many lamps are there āHow many sources of light are in the world
yehi loko pakÄsati; that light up the world? By means of which the world is illumined?
Bhavantaį¹ puį¹į¹humÄgamma, Weāve come to ask the Buddha; Weāve come to ask the Blessed One this:
kathaį¹ jÄnemu taį¹ mayanāti. how are we to understand this?ā How are we to understand it?ā
āCattÄro loke pajjotÄ, āThere are four lamps in the world, āThere are four sources of light in the world;
paƱcamettha na vijjati; a fifth is not found. A fifth one is not found here.
DivÄ tapati Ädicco, The sun blazes by day, The sun shines by day,
rattimÄbhÄti candimÄ. the moon radiates at night, The moon glows at night,
Atha aggi divÄrattiį¹, while a fire illuminates both And fire flares up both by day and at night,
tattha tattha pakÄsati; by day and by night. here and there.
Sambuddho tapataį¹ seį¹į¹ho, But a Buddha is the best of blazes: But the Buddha is the best of those that shine:
esÄ ÄbhÄ anuttarÄāti. this is the supreme radiance.ā He is the light unsurpassed. ā
