Pajjotasutta Lamp Source of Light

“Kiṁsu lokasmi pajjoto, “What’s the lamp for the world? “What is the source of light in the world?

kiṁsu lokasmi jāgaro; What in the world is wakeful? What in the world is the wakeful one?

Kiṁsu kamme sajīvānaṁ, Who are one’s work colleagues? What are the colleagues of those living by work?

kimassa iriyāpatho. What is one’s walk of life? What is one’s course of movement?

Kiṁsu alasaṁ analasañca, What nurtures the idle and the tireless, “What nurtures both the slack and active

Mātā puttaṁva posati; like a mother her child? Just as a mother nurtures her child?

Kiṁ bhūtā upajīvanti, By what do the creatures who live off the earth The creatures who dwell on the earth—

Ye pāṇā pathavissitā”ti. sustain their life?” By what do they sustain their life?”

“Paññā lokasmi pajjoto, “Wisdom is the lamp for the world. “Wisdom is the source of light in the world;

sati lokasmi jāgaro; Mindfulness in the world is wakeful. Mindfulness, in the world, is the wakeful one;

Gāvo kamme sajīvānaṁ, Cattle are one’s work colleagues, Cattle are the colleagues of those living by work;

sītassa iriyāpatho. and the furrow is one’s walk of life. One’s course of movement is the furrow.

Vuṭṭhi alasaṁ analasañca, Rain nurtures the idle and the tireless, “Rain nurtures both the slack and active

Mātā puttaṁva posati; like a mother her child. Just as a mother nurtures her child.

Vuṭṭhiṁ bhūtā upajīvanti, The creatures who live off the earth Those creatures who dwell on the earth
