Chetvāsutta Slain Having Slain

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity addressed the Buddha in verse: Standing to one side, that devatā addressed the Blessed One in verse:

“Kiṁsu chetvā sukhaṁ seti, “When what is slain do you sleep at ease? “Having slain what does one sleep soundly?

kiṁsu chetvā na socati; When what is slain is there no sorrow? Having slain what does one not sorrow?

Kissassu ekadhammassa, What’s the one thing, Gotama, What is the one thing,

vadhaṁ rocesi gotamā”ti. whose killing you approve?” O Gotama, Whose killing you approve?”

“Kodhaṁ chetvā sukhaṁ seti, “When anger’s slain you sleep at ease. “Having slain anger, one sleeps soundly;

kodhaṁ chetvā na socati; When anger’s slain there is no sorrow. Having slain anger, one does not sorrow;

Kodhassa visamūlassa, O deity, anger has a poisonous root The killing of anger,

madhuraggassa devate; and a honey tip. O devatā, With its poisoned root and honeyed tip:

Vadhaṁ ariyā pasaṁsanti, The noble ones praise its killing, This is the killing the noble ones praise,

tañhi chetvā na socatī”ti. for when it’s slain there is no sorrow.” For having slain that, one does not sorrow. ”
