Mahaddhanasutta Affluent Those of Great Wealth

“Mahaddhanā mahābhogā, “The affluent and the wealthy, “Those of great wealth and property,

raṭṭhavantopi khattiyā; even the aristocrats who rule the land, Even khattiyas who rule the country,

Aññamaññābhigijjhanti, are jealous of each other, Look at each other with greedy eyes,

kāmesu analaṅkatā. insatiable in sensual pleasures. Insatiable in sensual pleasures.

Tesu ussukkajātesu, Among those of such an avid nature, Among these who have become so avid,

bhavasotānusārisu; flowing along the stream of lives, Flowing along in the stream of existence,

Kedha taṇhaṁ pajahiṁsu, who here has given up craving? Who here have abandoned craving?

ke lokasmiṁ anussukā”ti. Who in the world is not avid?” Who in the world are no longer avid?”

“Hitvā agāraṁ pabbajitā, “Having given up their home, their child, their cattle, “Having left their homes and gone forth,

hitvā puttaṁ pasuṁ piyaṁ; and all that they love, they went forth. Having left their dear sons and cattle,

Hitvā rāgañca dosañca, Having given up desire and hate, Having left behind lust and hatred,

avijjañca virājiya; having dispelled ignorance, Having expunged ignorance—

Khīṇāsavā arahanto, the perfected ones with defilements ended—The arahants with taints destroyed

te lokasmiṁ anussukā”ti. they in the world are not avid.” Are those in the world no longer avid. ”
