Natthiputtasamasutta There’s Nothing Like a Child None Equal to That for a Son

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œNatthi puttasamaṁ pemaṁ, ā€œThere’s no fondness like that for a child, ā€œThere is no affection like that for a son,

natthi gosamitaṁ dhanaṁ; no wealth equal to cattle, No wealth equal to cattle,

Natthi sūriyasamā ābhā, no light like that of the sun, There is no light like the sun,

samuddaparamā sarÄā€ti. and of lakes the ocean is paramount.ā€ Among the waters the ocean is supreme. ā€

ā€œNatthi attasamaṁ pemaṁ, ā€œThere’s no fondness like that for oneself, ā€œThere is no affection like that for oneself,

natthi dhaññasamaṁ dhanaṁ; no wealth equal to grain, No wealth equal to grain,

Natthi paƱƱāsamā ābhā, no light like that of wisdom, There is no light like wisdom,

vuį¹­į¹­hi ve paramā sarÄā€ti. and of waters the rain is paramount.ā€ Among the waters the rain is supreme. ā€
