Nandatisutta Delight Delight

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œNandati puttehi puttimā, ā€œChildren bring you delight! ā€œOne who has sons delights in sons,

Gomā gohi tatheva nandati; Cattle also bring you delight! One with cattle delights in cattle.

UpadhÄ«hi narassa nandanā, For attachments are a man’s delight; Acquisitions truly are a man’s delight;

Na hi so nandati yo nirÅ«padhÄ«ā€ti. without attachments there’s no delight.ā€ Without acquisitions one does not delight. ā€

ā€œSocati puttehi puttimā, ā€œChildren bring you sorrow. ā€œOne who has sons sorrows over sons,

Gomā gohi tatheva socati; Cattle also bring you sorrow. One with cattle sorrows over cattle.

UpadhÄ«hi narassa socanā, For attachments are a man’s sorrow; Acquisitions truly are a man’s sorrows;

Na hi so socati yo nirÅ«padhÄ«ā€ti. without attachments there are no sorrows.ā€ Without acquisitions one does not sorrow. ā€
