Jāgarasutta Awake Awake

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œKati jāgarataṁ suttā, ā€œHow many sleep among the waking? ā€œHow many are asleep when others are awake?

kati suttesu jāgarā; How many wake among the sleeping? How many are awake when others sleep?

Katibhi rajamādeti, By how many do you gather dust? By how many does one gather dust?

katibhi parisujjhatÄ«ā€ti. By how many are you cleansed?ā€ By how many is one purified?ā€

ā€œPaƱca jāgarataṁ suttā, ā€œFive sleep among the waking. ā€œFive are asleep when others are awake;

paƱca suttesu jāgarā; Five wake among the sleeping. Five are awake when others sleep.

PaƱcabhi rajamādeti, By five you gather dust. By five things one gathers dust,

paƱcabhi parisujjhatÄ«ā€ti. By five you’re cleansed.ā€ By five things one is purified. ā€
