Udāna 5.9 Heartfelt Sayings 5.9

Sadhāyamānasutta Teasing

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṁ carati mahatā bhikkhusaį¹…ghena saddhiṁ. At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saį¹…gha of mendicants.

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā māṇavakā bhagavato avidÅ«re sadhāyamānarÅ«pā atikkamanti. Now at that time several young students were passing by not far from the Buddha in a teasing manner.

Addasā kho bhagavā sambahule māṇavake avidÅ«re sadhāyamānarÅ«pe atikkante. The Buddha saw them.

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ā€œParimuį¹­į¹­hā paį¹‡įøitābhāsā, ā€œDolts pretending to be astute,

vācāgocarabhāṇino; they talk, their words out of bounds.

Yāvicchanti mukhāyāmaṁ, They blab at will, their mouths agape,

yena nÄ«tā na taṁ vidÅ«ā€ti. and no-one knows what leads them on.ā€
