Pilindavacchasutta With Pilindavaccha
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground.
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ pilindavaccho bhikkhÅ« vasalavÄdena samudÄcarati. Now at that time Venerable Pilindavaccha addressed the mendicants as ālowlifesā.
Atha kho sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
āÄyasmÄ, bhante, pilindavaccho bhikkhÅ« vasalavÄdena samudÄcaratÄ«āti. āSir, Venerable Pilindavaccha addresses the mendicants as ālowlifesā.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ aƱƱataraį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ämantesi: So the Buddha addressed one of the monks,
āehi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, mama vacanena pilindavacchaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ämantehi: āPlease, monk, in my name tell the mendicant Pilindavaccha that
āsatthÄ taį¹, Ävuso pilindavaccha, ÄmantetÄ«āāti. the Teacher summons him.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paį¹issutvÄ yenÄyasmÄ pilindavaccho tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ pilindavacchaį¹ etadavoca: āYes, sir,ā that monk replied. He went to Pilindavaccha and said to him,
āsatthÄ taį¹, Ävuso pilindavaccha, ÄmantetÄ«āti. āReverend Pilindavaccha, the teacher summons you.ā
āEvamÄvusoāti kho ÄyasmÄ pilindavaccho tassa bhikkhuno paį¹issutvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho Äyasmantaį¹ pilindavacchaį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: āYes, reverend,ā Pilindavaccha replied. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
āsaccaį¹ kira tvaį¹, vaccha, bhikkhÅ« vasalavÄdena samudÄcarasÄ«āti? āIs it really true, Vaccha, that you addressed the mendicants as ālowlifesā?ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti. āYes, sir,ā he replied.
Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmato pilindavacchassa pubbenivÄsaį¹ manasi karitvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then, having applied his mind to Pilindavacchaās past lives, the Buddha said to the mendicants,
āmÄ kho tumhe, bhikkhave, vacchassa bhikkhuno ujjhÄyittha. āMendicants, donāt complain about the mendicant Vaccha.
Na, bhikkhave, vaccho dosantaro bhikkhÅ« vasalavÄdena samudÄcarati. He doesnāt address the mendicants as ālowlifesā out of hate.
Vacchassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno paƱca jÄtisatÄni abbokiį¹į¹Äni brÄhmaį¹akule paccÄjÄtÄni. For five hundred lives without interruption he was reborn in a brahmin family.
So tassa vasalavÄdo dÄ«gharattaį¹ samudÄciį¹į¹o. For a long time, he has addressed people as ālowlifeā.
TenÄyaį¹ vaccho bhikkhÅ« vasalavÄdena samudÄcaratÄ«āti. Thatās why he addresses the mendicants as ālowlifesā.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ etamatthaį¹ viditvÄ tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
āYamhi na mÄyÄ vasatÄ« na mÄno, āIn whom dwells no deceit or conceit,
Yo vÄ«talobho amamo nirÄso; rid of greed, unselfish, with no need for hope,
Paį¹unnakodho abhinibbutatto, with anger eliminated, quenched:
So brÄhmaį¹o so samaį¹o sa bhikkhÅ«āti. they are a brahmin, an ascetic, a mendicant.ā
