AjakalÄpakasutta At AjakalÄpaka
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ pÄvÄyaį¹ viharati ajakalÄpake cetiye, ajakalÄpakassa yakkhassa bhavane. At one time the Buddha was staying in PÄvÄ at the AjakalÄpaka Shrine, the haunt of the native spirit AjakalÄpaka.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ rattandhakÄratimisÄyaį¹ abbhokÄse nisinno hoti; devo ca ekamekaį¹ phusÄyati. Now at that time the Buddha was meditating in the open during the dark of night, while a gentle rain drizzled down.
Atha kho ajakalÄpako yakkho bhagavato bhayaį¹ chambhitattaį¹ lomahaį¹saį¹ uppÄdetukÄmo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavato avidÅ«re tikkhattuį¹ āakkulo pakkuloāti akkulapakkulikaį¹ akÄsi: Then AjakalÄpaka, wanting to make the Buddha feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, approached him, and while not far away yelled three times, āGrr! Arrgh!ā Then he added,
āeso te, samaį¹a, pisÄcoāti. āNow thatās a goblin for you, ascetic!ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ etamatthaį¹ viditvÄ tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
āYadÄ sakesu dhammesu, āWhen a brahmin gets over
pÄragÅ« hoti brÄhmaį¹o; their own issues,
Atha etaį¹ pisÄcaƱca, they transcend this goblin
pakkulaƱcÄtivattatÄ«āti. and his grunts.ā
