Vijayātherīgāthā Verses of the Elder Vijayā Vijayā

ā€œCatukkhattuṁ paƱcakkhattuṁ, ā€œFour times, five times, Four or five times

vihārā upanikkhamiṁ; I went outside, I left my dwelling;

Aladdhā cetaso santiṁ, I had not attained peace of mind, I had failed to find peace of heart,

citte avasavattinī. and I had no power over the mind. or any control over my mind.

Bhikkhuniṁ upasaį¹…kamma, I approached a bhikkhunÄ«, I approached a nun

sakkaccaṁ paripucchahaṁ; and respectfully asked questions. and politely questioned her.

Sā me dhammamadesesi, She taught me the Dhamma: She taught me the Dhamma:

dhātuāyatanāni ca. the elements, the sense domains, the elements and sense fields,

Cattāri ariyasaccāni, the Four Noble Truths, the four noble truths,

indriyāni balāni ca; the faculties, the powers, the faculties and the powers,

Bojjhaį¹…gaį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikaṁ maggaṁ, the enlightenment factors, and the Eightfold Path, the awakening factors, and the eightfold path

uttamatthassa pattiyā. for the attainment of the highest aim. for the attainment of the highest goal.

Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā, I heard and After hearing her words,

karontī anusāsaniṁ; followed her instructions. I did her bidding.

Rattiyā purime yāme, In the first watch of the night, In the first watch of the night,

pubbajātimanussariṁ. I remembered my previous lives. I recollected my past lives.

Rattiyā majjhime yāme, In the second watch of the night, In the middle watch of the night,

dibbacakkhuṁ visodhayiṁ; I purified the divine eye. I purified my clairvoyance.

Rattiyā pacchime yāme, In the third watch of the night, In the last watch of the night,

tamokhandhaṁ padālayiṁ. I destroyed this mass of darkness. I shattered the mass of darkness.

Pītisukhena ca kāyaṁ, Then I dwelled permeating the body I then meditated pervading my body

Pharitvā vihariṁ tadā; with bliss and happiness. with rapture and bliss.

Sattamiyā pāde pasāresiṁ, On the seventh day I stretched out my feet, On the seventh day I stretched out my feet,

Tamokhandhaṁ padāliyÄā€ti. I destroyed this mass of darkness.ā€ having shattered the mass of darkness.
