āParipuį¹į¹akÄyo suruci, āO Blessed One, your bodyās perfect,
SujÄto cÄrudassano; youāre radiant, handsome, lovely to behold;
Suvaį¹į¹avaį¹į¹osi bhagavÄ, golden colored,
SusukkadÄį¹hosi vÄ«riyavÄ. with teeth so white; youāre strong.
Narassa hi sujÄtassa, The characteristics
ye bhavanti viyaƱjanÄ; of a handsome man,
Sabbe te tava kÄyasmiį¹, the marks of a great man,
mahÄpurisalakkhaį¹Ä. are all found on your body.
Pasannanetto sumukho, Your eyes are clear, your face is fair,
brahÄ uju patÄpavÄ; youāre formidable, upright, majestic.
Majjhe samaį¹asaį¹
ghassa, In the midst of the Saį¹
gha of ascetics,
Ädiccova virocasi. you shine like the sun.
KalyÄį¹adassano bhikkhu, Youāre a mendicant fine to see,
kaƱcanasannibhattaco; with skin that shines like lustrous gold.
Kiį¹ te samaį¹abhÄvena, But with such excellent appearance,
evaį¹ uttamavaį¹į¹ino. what do you want with the ascetic life?
RÄjÄ arahasi bhavituį¹, Youāre fit to be a king,
cakkavattī rathesabho; a wheel-turning monarch, chief of charioteers,
CÄturanto vijitÄvÄ«, victorious in the four quarters,
jambusaį¹įøassa issaro. lord of the Black Plum Tree Land.
KhattiyÄ bhogÄ« rÄjÄno, Aristocrats, nobles, and kings
anuyantÄ bhavanti te; ought follow your rule.
RÄjÄbhirÄjÄ manujindo, Gotama, you should reign
rajjaį¹ kÄrehi gotamaā. as king of kings, lord of mankind!ā
āRÄjÄhamasmi sela, āI am a king, Selaā,
(selÄti bhagavÄ) said the Buddha to Sela,
DhammarÄjÄ anuttaro; āthe supreme king of the teaching.
Dhammena cakkaį¹ vattemi, By the teaching I roll forth the wheel
Cakkaį¹ appaį¹ivattiyaį¹ā. which cannot be rolled back.ā
āSambuddho paį¹ijÄnÄsi, āYou claim to be awakened,ā
(iti selo brÄhmaį¹o) said Sela the brahmin,
DhammarÄjÄ anuttaro; āthe supreme king of the teaching.
āDhammena cakkaį¹ vattemiā, āI roll forth the teachingā:
Iti bhÄsatha gotama. so you say, Gotama.
Ko nu senÄpati bhoto, Then who is your general,
sÄvako satthuranvayo; the disciple who follows the Teacherās way?
Ko tetamanuvatteti, Who keeps rolling the wheel
dhammacakkaį¹ pavattitaį¹ā. of the teaching you rolled forth?ā
āMayÄ pavattitaį¹ cakkaį¹, āBy me the wheel was rolled forth,ā
(selÄti bhagavÄ) said the Buddha,
Dhammacakkaį¹ anuttaraį¹; āthe supreme wheel of the teaching.
SÄriputto anuvatteti, SÄriputta, taking after the Realized One,
AnujÄto tathÄgataį¹. keeps it rolling on.
AbhiƱƱeyyaį¹ abhiƱƱÄtaį¹, I have known what should be known,
bhÄvetabbaƱca bhÄvitaį¹; and developed what should be developed,
PahÄtabbaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ me, and given up what should be given up:
tasmÄ buddhosmi brÄhmaį¹a. and so, brahmin, I am a Buddha.
Vinayassu mayi kaį¹
khaį¹, Dispel your doubt in meā
adhimuccassu brÄhmaį¹a; make up your mind, brahmin!
Dullabhaį¹ dassanaį¹ hoti, The sight of a Buddha
sambuddhÄnaį¹ abhiį¹haso. is hard to find again.
Yesaį¹ ve dullabho loke, I am a Buddha, brahmin,
pÄtubhÄvo abhiį¹haso; the supreme surgeon,
Sohaį¹ brÄhmaį¹a buddhosmi, one of those whose appearance in the world
sallakatto anuttaro. is hard to find again.
Brahmabhūto atitulo, A manifestation of divinity, unequaled,
mÄrasenappamaddano; crusher of MÄraās army;
SabbÄmitte vase katvÄ, having subdued all my opponents,
modÄmi akutobhayoā. I rejoice, fearing nothing from any quarter.ā
āIdaį¹ bhonto nisÄmetha, āPay heed, sirs, to what
yathÄ bhÄsati cakkhumÄ; is spoken by the Clear-eyed One.
Sallakatto mahÄvÄ«ro, The surgeon, the great hero,
sīhova nadatī vane. roars like a lion in the jungle.
BrahmabhÅ«taį¹ atitulaį¹, A manifestation of divinity, unequaled,
mÄrasenappamaddanaį¹; crusher of MÄraās army;
Ko disvÄ nappasÄ«deyya, who would not be inspired by him,
api kaį¹hÄbhijÄtiko. even one born in a dark class?
Yo maį¹ icchati anvetu, Those who wish may follow me;
yo vÄ nicchati gacchatu; those who donāt may go.
IdhÄhaį¹ pabbajissÄmi, Right here, Iāll go forth in his presence,
varapaƱƱassa santikeā. the one of such exceptional wisdom.ā
āEtaƱce ruccati bhoto, āSir, if you endorse
sammÄsambuddhasÄsanaį¹; the teaching of the Buddha,
Mayampi pabbajissÄma, weāll also go forth in his presence,
varapaƱƱassa santikeā. the one of such exceptional wisdom.ā
āBrÄhmaį¹Ä tisatÄ ime, āThese three hundred brahmins
yÄcanti paƱjalÄ«katÄ; with joined palms held up, ask:
āBrahmacariyaį¹ carissÄma, āMay we lead the spiritual life
bhagavÄ tava santikeāā. in your presence, Blessed One?āā
āSvÄkkhÄtaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, āThe spiritual life is well explained,ā
(selÄti bhagavÄ) said the Buddha,
Sandiį¹į¹hikamakÄlikaį¹; āapparent in the present life, immediately effective.
Yattha amoghÄ pabbajjÄ, Here the going forth isnāt in vain
Appamattassa sikkhatoā. for one who trains with diligence.ā
āYaį¹ taį¹ saraį¹amÄgamha, āThis is the eighth day since
ito aį¹į¹hame cakkhuma; we went for refuge, O Clear-eyed One.
Sattarattena bhagavÄ, In these seven days, Blessed One,
dantÄmha tava sÄsane. weāve become tamed in your teaching.
Tuvaį¹ buddho tuvaį¹ satthÄ, You are the Buddha, you are the Teacher,
tuvaį¹ mÄrÄbhibhÅ« muni; you are the sage who has overcome MÄra;
Tuvaį¹ anusaye chetvÄ, you have cut off the underlying tendencies,
tiį¹į¹o tÄresimaį¹ pajaį¹. youāve crossed over, and you bring humanity across.
UpadhÄ« te samatikkantÄ, You have transcended attachments,
ÄsavÄ te padÄlitÄ; your defilements are shattered;
SÄ«hova anupÄdÄno, by not grasping, like a lion,
pahÄ«nabhayabheravo. youāve given up fear and dread.
Bhikkhavo tisatÄ ime, These three hundred mendicants
tiį¹į¹hanti paƱjalÄ«katÄ; stand with joined palms raised.
PÄde vÄ«ra pasÄrehi, Stretch out your feet, great hero:
nÄgÄ vandantu satthunoāti. let these giants bow to the Teacher.ā
