āAyoni suddhimanvesaį¹, Seeking purity the wrong way,
aggiį¹ paricariį¹ vane; I served the sacred fire in a grove.
Suddhimaggaį¹ ajÄnanto, Not knowing the path to purity,
akÄsiį¹ amaraį¹ tapaį¹. I practiced endless mortification.
Taį¹ sukhena sukhaį¹ laddhaį¹, Iāve gained this happiness by means of happiness:
passa dhammasudhammataį¹; see the excellence of the teaching!
Tisso vijjÄ anuppattÄ, Iāve attained the three knowledges
kataį¹ buddhassa sÄsanaį¹. and fulfilled the Buddhaās instructions.
Brahmabandhu pure Äsiį¹, I used to be brahmin only by kin,
idÄni khomhi brÄhmaį¹o; but now I really am a brahmin!
Tevijjo nhÄtako camhi, I am master of the three knowledges, Iām a bathed initiate,
sottiyo camhi vedagÅ«āti. Iām a scholar and a knowledge master.
