Piį¹…giyamāṇavapucchā The Questions of Piį¹…giya

ā€œJiṇṇohamasmi abalo vÄ«tavaṇṇo, ā€œI am old, feeble, and pallid,ā€

(iccāyasmā piį¹…giyo) said Venerable Piį¹…giya,

Nettā na suddhā savanaṁ na phāsu; ā€œmy eyes unclear, my hearing faint—

Māhaṁ nassaṁ momuho antarāva, don’t let me perish while still confused.

Ācikkha dhammaṁ yamahaṁ vijaƱƱaṁ; Explain the teaching so that I may understand

Jātijarāya idha vippahānaį¹ā€. the giving up of rebirth and old age here.ā€

ā€œDisvāna rÅ«pesu vihaƱƱamāne, ā€œSeeing them harmed on account of forms,ā€

(piį¹…giyāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Ruppanti rÅ«pesu janā pamattā; ā€œon account of forms those negligent folk are afflicted—

Tasmā tuvaṁ piį¹…giya appamatto, therefore, Piį¹…giya, being diligent,

Jahassu rÅ«paṁ apunabbhavāyaā€. give up form so as not to be reborn.ā€

ā€œDisā catasso vidisā catasso, ā€œThe four quarters, the intermediate directions,

Uddhaṁ adho dasa disā imāyo; below, and above: in these ten directions

Na tuyhaṁ adiį¹­į¹­haṁ asutaṁ amutaṁ, there’s nothing at all in the world

Atho aviƱƱātaṁ kiƱcanamatthi loke; that you’ve not seen, heard, thought, or cognized.

Santāpajāte jarasā parete; ā€œtormented, mired in old age;

Tasmā tuvaṁ piį¹…giya appamatto, therefore, Piį¹…giya, being diligent,

Jahassu taṇhaṁ apunabbhavāyÄā€ti. give up craving so as not to be reborn.ā€
