ā€œJhāyiṁ virajamāsÄ«naṁ, ā€œTo the meditator, rid of hopes,ā€

(iccāyasmā udayo) said Venerable Udaya,

Katakiccaṁ anāsavaṁ; ā€œwho has completed the task, is free of defilements,

Pāraguṁ sabbadhammānaṁ, and has gone beyond all things,

Atthi pañhena āgamaṁ; I have come seeking with a question.

Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūhi, Tell me the liberation by enlightenment,

Avijjāya pabhedanaį¹ā€. the smashing of ignorance.ā€

ā€œPahānaṁ kāmacchandānaṁ, ā€œThe giving up of bothā€

(udayāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Domanassāna cÅ«bhayaṁ; ā€œsensual desires and displeasures;

Thinassa ca panūdanaṁ, the dispelling of dullness,

Kukkuccānaṁ nivāraṇaṁ. and the prevention of remorse;

Upekkhāsatisaṁsuddhaṁ, pure equanimity and mindfulness,

dhammatakkapurejavaṁ; preceded by investigation of principles—

Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūmi, this, I declare, is liberation by enlightenment,

avijjāya pabhedanaį¹ā€. the smashing of ignorance.ā€

ā€œKiṁsu saṁyojano loko, ā€œWhat fetters the world?

kiṁsu tassa vicāraṇaṁ; How does it travel about?

Kissassa vippahānena, With the giving up of what

nibbānaṁ iti vuccatiā€. is extinguishment spoken of?ā€

ā€œNandisaṁyojano loko, ā€œDelight fetters the world.

vitakkassa vicāraṇaṁ; It travels about by means of thought.

Taṇhāya vippahānena, With the giving up of craving

nibbānaṁ iti vuccatiā€. extinguishment is spoken of.ā€

ā€œKathaṁ satassa carato, ā€œFor one living mindfully,

viññāṇaṁ uparujjhati; how does consciousness cease?

Bhagavantaṁ puį¹į¹humāgamma, We’ve come to ask you, worthy sir:

taṁ suṇoma vaco tavaā€. let us hear what you say.ā€

ā€œAjjhattaƱca bahiddhā ca, ā€œNot taking pleasure in feeling

Vedanaṁ nābhinandato; internally and externally—

Evaṁ satassa carato, for one living mindfully,

Viññāṇaṁ uparujjhatÄ«ā€ti. that’s how consciousness ceases.ā€

Udayamāṇavapucchā terasamā.
