Ajitamāṇavapucchā The Questions of Ajita

ā€œKenassu nivuto loko, ā€œBy what is the world shrouded?ā€

(iccāyasmā ajito) said Venerable Ajita.

Kenassu nappakāsati; ā€œWhy does it not shine?

Kissābhilepanaṁ brūsi, Tell me, what is its tar pit?

Kiṁsu tassa mahabbhayaį¹ā€. What is its greatest fear?ā€

ā€œAvijjāya nivuto loko, ā€œThe world is shrouded in ignorance.ā€

(ajitāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha.

Vevicchā pamādā nappakāsati; ā€œAvarice and negligence make it not shine.

Jappābhilepanaṁ brūmi, Prayer is its tar pit.

Dukkhamassa mahabbhayaį¹ā€. Suffering is its greatest fear.ā€

ā€œSavanti sabbadhi sotā, ā€œThe streams flow everywhere,ā€

(iccāyasmā ajito) said Venerable Ajita.

Sotānaṁ kiṁ nivāraṇaṁ; ā€œWhat is there to block them?

Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brÅ«hi, And tell me the restraint of streams—

Kena sotā pidhiyyareā€. by what are they locked out?ā€

ā€œYāni sotāni lokasmiṁ, ā€œThe streams in the world,ā€

(ajitāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Sati tesaṁ nivāraṇaṁ; ā€œare blocked by mindfulness.

Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brÅ«mi, I tell you the restraint of streams—

PaƱƱāyete pidhiyyareā€. they are locked out by wisdom.ā€

ā€œPaƱƱā ceva sati yaƱca, ā€œThat wisdom and mindfulness,ā€

(iccāyasmā ajito) said Venerable Ajita,

NāmarÅ«paƱca mārisa; ā€œand that which is name and form, good fellow;

Etaṁ me puṭṭho pabrūhi, when questioned, please tell me of this:

Katthetaṁ uparujjhatiā€. where does this all cease?ā€

ā€œYametaṁ paƱhaṁ apucchi, ā€œThis question which you have asked,

ajita taṁ vadāmi te; I shall answer you, Ajita.

Yattha nāmañca rūpañca, Where name and form

asesaṁ uparujjhati; cease with nothing left over—

Viññāṇassa nirodhena, with the cessation of consciousness,

etthetaṁ uparujjhatiā€. here they cease.ā€

ā€œYe ca saį¹…khātadhammāse, ā€œThere are those who have appraised the teaching,

ye ca sekhā puthū idha; and many kinds of trainees here.

Tesaṁ me nipako iriyaṁ, Tell me about their behavior, good fellow,

puį¹į¹ho pabrÅ«hi mārisaā€. when asked, for you are alert.ā€

ā€œKāmesu nābhigijjheyya, ā€œNot greedy for sensual pleasures,

Manasānāvilo siyā; their mind would be unclouded.

Kusalo sabbadhammānaṁ, Skilled in all things,

Sato bhikkhu paribbajeā€ti. a mendicant would wander mindful.ā€

Ajitamāṇavapucchā paį¹hamā.
