Cundasutta With Cunda
āPucchÄmi muniį¹ pahÅ«tapaƱƱaį¹, āI ask the sage abounding in wisdom,ā
(iti cundo kammÄraputto) said Cunda the smith,
Buddhaį¹ dhammassÄmiį¹ vÄ«tataį¹haį¹; āthe Buddha, master of the teaching, free of craving,
Dvipaduttamaį¹ sÄrathÄ«naį¹ pavaraį¹, best of men, excellent charioteer, please tell me this:
Kati loke samaį¹Ä tadiį¹
gha brÅ«hiā. how many ascetics are there in the world?ā
āCaturo samaį¹Ä na paƱcamatthi, āThere are four ascetics, not a fifth.ā
(cundÄti bhagavÄ) said the Buddha to Cunda,
Te te Ävikaromi sakkhipuį¹į¹ho; āBeing asked to bear witness, I will explain them to you:
Maggajino maggadesako ca, the path-victor, the path-teacher,
Magge jÄ«vati yo ca maggadÅ«sÄ«ā. the path-liver, and the path-wrecker.ā
āKaį¹ maggajinaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ, āWho is a path-victor according to the Buddhas?ā
(iti cundo kammÄraputto) said Cunda the smith,
MaggakkhÄyÄ« kathaį¹ atulyo hoti; āand how is one an unequaled explainer of the path?
Magge jÄ«vati me brÅ«hi puį¹į¹ho, Tell me when asked about one who lives the path,
Atha me Ävikarohi maggadÅ«siį¹ā. then declare the path-wrecker.ā
āYo tiį¹į¹akathaį¹
katho visallo, āRid of indecision, free of thorns,
NibbÄnÄbhirato anÄnugiddho; delighting in extinguishment, not fawning,
Lokassa sadevakassa netÄ, a guide for the world with its gods.
TÄdiį¹ maggajinaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ. The Buddhas say one such is victor of the path.
Paramaį¹ paramanti yodha ƱatvÄ, Knowing the ultimate as ultimate,
AkkhÄti vibhajate idheva dhammaį¹; they explain and analyze the teaching right here.
Taį¹ kaį¹
khachidaį¹ muniį¹ anejaį¹, That sage unstirred, with doubt cut off,
Dutiyaį¹ bhikkhunamÄhu maggadesiį¹. is the second mendicant, I say, the teacher of the path.
Yo dhammapade sudesite, Living restrained and mindful on the path
Magge jÄ«vati saƱƱato satÄ«mÄ; of the well-taught passage of teaching,
AnavajjapadÄni sevamÄno, cultivating blameless states,
Tatiyaį¹ bhikkhunamÄhu maggajÄ«viį¹. is the third mendicant, I say, the path-liver.
Chadanaį¹ katvÄna subbatÄnaį¹, Dressed like one true to their vows,
Pakkhandī kuladūsako pagabbho; pushy, rude, a corrupter of families,
MÄyÄvÄ« asaƱƱato palÄpo, devious, unrestrained, chaff,
PatirÅ«pena caraį¹ sa maggadÅ«sÄ«. the path-wreckerās life is a sham.
Ete ca paį¹ivijjhi yo gahaį¹į¹ho, A layperson who gets this,
SutavÄ ariyasÄvako sapaƱƱo; a learned, wise noble disciple,
Sabbe netÄdisÄti ƱatvÄ, knows that āThey are not all like that oneā.
Iti disvÄ na hÄpeti tassa saddhÄ; So when they see them they donāt lose their faith.
Kathaį¹ hi duį¹į¹hena asampaduį¹į¹haį¹, For how could one equate themā
Suddhaį¹ asuddhena samaį¹ kareyyÄāti. the corrupt with the uncorrupt, the pure with the impure?ā
