Dhaniyasutta The Wealthy Rancher

ā€œPakkodano duddhakhÄ«rohamasmi, ā€œI’ve boiled my rice and drawn my milk,ā€

(iti dhaniyo gopo) said Dhaniya the rancher,

AnutÄ«re mahiyā samānavāso; ā€œI stay with my family along the bank of the MahÄ«.

Channā kuṭi āhito gini, My hut is roofed, my sacred fire kindled:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œAkkodhano vigatakhilohamasmi, ā€œI boil not with anger and have drawn out hard-heartedness,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

AnutÄ«re mahiyekarattivāso; ā€œI stay for one night along the bank of the MahÄ«.

Vivaṭā kuṭi nibbuto gini, My hut is wide open, my fire is quenched:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œAndhakamakasā na vijjare, ā€œNo gadflies or mosquitoes are found,ā€

(iti dhaniyo gopo) said Dhaniya,

Kacche rūḷhatiṇe caranti gāvo; ā€œcows graze on the lush meadow grass.

Vuṭṭhimpi saheyyumāgataṁ, They get by even when the rain comes:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œBaddhāsi bhisÄ« susaį¹…khatā, ā€œI bound a raft and made it well,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Tiṇṇo pāragato vineyya oghaṁ; ā€œand with it I crossed over, went to the far shore, and dispelled the flood.

Attho bhisiyā na vijjati, Now I have no need for a raft:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œGopÄ« mama assavā alolā, ā€œMy wife is obedient, not wanton,ā€

(iti dhaniyo gopo) said Dhaniya,

DÄ«gharattaṁ saṁvāsiyā manāpā; ā€œlong have we lived together happily.

Tassā na suṇāmi kiƱci pāpaṁ, I hear nothing bad about her:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œCittaṁ mama assavaṁ vimuttaṁ, ā€œMy mind is obedient and freed,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

DÄ«gharattaṁ paribhāvitaṁ sudantaṁ; ā€œlong nurtured and well-tamed.

Pāpaṁ pana me na vijjati, Nothing bad is found in me:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œAttavetanabhatohamasmi, ā€œI am self-employed,ā€

(iti dhaniyo gopo) said Dhaniya,

Puttā ca me samāniyā arogā; ā€œand my healthy children likewise.

Tesaṁ na suṇāmi kiƱci pāpaṁ, I hear nothing bad about them:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œNāhaṁ bhatakosmi kassaci, ā€œI am no-one’s lackey,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Nibbiį¹­į¹­hena carāmi sabbaloke; ā€œwith what I have earned I wander the world.

Attho bhatiyā na vijjati, I have no need for wages:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œAtthi vasā atthi dhenupā, ā€œI have heifers and sucklings,ā€

(iti dhaniyo gopo) said Dhaniya,

Godharaṇiyo paveṇiyopi atthi; ā€œcows in calf and breeding cows.

Usabhopi gavampatÄ«dha atthi, I’ve also got a bull, captain of the herd here:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œNatthi vasā natthi dhenupā, ā€œI have no heifers or sucklings,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Godharaṇiyo paveṇiyopi natthi; ā€œno cows in calf or breeding cows.

Usabhopi gavampatÄ«dha natthi, I haven’t got a bull, captain of the herd here:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œKhilā nikhātā asampavedhÄ«, ā€œThe stakes are driven in, unshakable,ā€

(iti dhaniyo gopo) said Dhaniya,

Dāmā muƱjamayā navā susaṇṭhānā; ā€œThe grass halters are new and well-woven,

Na hi sakkhinti dhenupāpi chettuṁ, not even the sucklings can break them:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

ā€œUsabhoriva chetva bandhanāni, ā€œLike a bull I broke the bonds,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Nāgo pÅ«tilataṁva dālayitvā; ā€œlike an elephant I snapped the vine.

Nāhaṁ punupessaṁ gabbhaseyyaṁ, I will never lie in a womb again:

Atha ce patthayasÄ« pavassa devaā€. so rain forth, heavens, if you wish.ā€

Ninnañca thalañca pūrayanto, Right then a thundercloud rained down,

Mahāmegho pavassi tāvadeva; soaking the uplands and valleys.

Sutvā devassa vassato, Hearing the heavens rain down,

Imamatthaṁ dhaniyo abhāsatha. Dhaniya said this:

ā€œLābhā vata no anappakā, ā€œIt is no small gain for us

Ye mayaṁ bhagavantaṁ addasāma; that we have seen the Buddha.

Saraṇaṁ taṁ upema cakkhuma, We come to you for refuge, Clear-eyed One.

Satthā no hohi tuvaṁ mahāmuni. O great sage, please be our Teacher.

Gopī ca ahaƱca assavā, My wife and I, obedient,

Brahmacariyaṁ sugate carāmase; shall lead the spiritual life under the Holy One.

Jātimaraṇassa pāragÅ«, Gone beyond birth and death,

Dukkhassantakarā bhavāmaseā€. we shall make an end of suffering.ā€

ā€œNandati puttehi puttimā, ā€œChildren bring you delight!ā€

(iti māro pāpimā) said Māra the Wicked,

Gomā gohi tatheva nandati; ā€œCattle also bring you delight!

UpadhÄ« hi narassa nandanā, For attachments are a man’s delight;

Na hi so nandati yo nirÅ«padhiā€. without attachments there’s no delight.ā€

ā€œSocati puttehi puttimā, ā€œYour children bring you sorrow,ā€

(iti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Gomā gohi tatheva socati; ā€œYour cattle also bring you sorrow.

UpadhÄ« hi narassa socanā, For attachments are a man’s sorrow;

Na hi so socati yo nirÅ«padhÄ«ā€ti. without attachments there are no sorrows.ā€

Dhaniyasuttaṁ dutiyaṁ.
