14. SukhumapaƱha Question on the Subtle

Rājā āha—The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, sakkā sabbaṁ sukhumaṁ chinditunā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, is it possible to cut through the subtlest of all things?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, mahārāja, sakkā sabbaṁ sukhumaṁ chinditunā€ti. ā€œYes, your majesty, it is possible to cut through the subtlest of all things.ā€

ā€œKiṁ pana, bhante, sabbaṁ sukhumanā€ti? ā€œThen what, venerable sir, is the subtlest of all things?ā€

ā€œDhammo kho, mahārāja, sabbasukhumo, na kho, mahārāja, dhammā sabbe sukhumā, ā€˜sukhuman’ti vā ā€˜thÅ«lan’ti vā dhammānametamadhivacanaṁ. ā€œThe Dhamma, your majesty, is the subtlest of all things. But not all qualities are subtle, your majesty, subtle or coarse is a designation for a quality.

Yaṁ kiƱci chinditabbaṁ, sabbaṁ taṁ paƱƱāya chindati, natthi dutiyaṁ paƱƱāya chedananā€ti. Whatever is to be cut through, all that is cut through by wisdom. There is nothing else other than wisdom for cutting through.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
