11. AssāsapassāsanirodhapaƱha Question on the Cessation of In and Out Breathing

Rājā āha—The king asked,

ā€œbhante nāgasena, tumhe evaṁ bhaṇathaā€”ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, do you say thus,

ā€˜sakkā assāsapassāse nirodhetunā€™ā€ti? ā€˜It is possible to cease in and out breathing’?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, mahārāja, sakkā assāsapassāse nirodhetunā€ti. ā€œYes, your majesty, it is possible to cease in and out breathing.ā€

ā€œKathaṁ, bhante nāgasena, sakkā assāsapassāse nirodhetunā€ti. ā€œHow, venerable Nāgasena, is it possible to cease in and out breathing?ā€

ā€œTaṁ kiṁ maƱƱasi, mahārāja, sutapubbo te koci kākacchamānoā€ti. ā€œWhat do you think, your majesty, have you heard before of someone snoring?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, sutapubboā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, I have heard of it.ā€

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, mahārāja, so saddo kāye namite virameyyāā€ti. ā€œWould that sound be stopped, your majesty, if the body were bent?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, virameyyāā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, it would be.ā€

ā€œSo hi nāma, mahārāja, saddo abhāvitakāyassa abhāvitasÄ«lassa abhāvitacittassa abhāvitapaƱƱassa kāye namite viramissati, kiṁ pana bhāvitakāyassa bhāvitasÄ«lassa bhāvitacittassa bhāvitapaƱƱassa catutthajjhānaṁ samāpannassa assāsapassāsā na nirujjhissantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œSince, your majesty, that sound would be stopped if the body were bent by someone undeveloped in body, virtue, mind, and wisdom, why could not the breathing in and the breathing out be ceased for someone developed in body, virtue, mind, and wisdom, and who has attained the fourth jhāna?ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
