Arūpadhammavavatthānavagga Analysis of Formless Dhammas Chapter

2. Buddhaguṇasatipaį¹ilābhapaƱha Question on Obtaining Mindfulness on a Quality of the Buddha

Rājā āha—The king said:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, tumhe etaṁ bhaṇathaā€”ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, you said this,

ā€˜yo vassasataṁ akusalaṁ kareyya, maraṇakāle ca ekaṁ buddhaguṇaṁ satiṁ paį¹ilabheyya, so devesu uppajjeyyā’ti etaṁ na saddahāmi, evaƱca pana vadetha ā€˜ekena pāṇātipātena niraye uppajjeyyā’ti etampi na saddahāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€˜One could do evil for a hundred years, but at the time of death might obtain a single mindful moment on a quality of the Buddha, and thus arise in the realm of the devas,’ I don’t believe this. And then you said, ā€˜One might arise in a hell realm by killing one person,’ this too I don’t believe.ā€

ā€œTaṁ kiṁ maƱƱasi, mahārāja, khuddakopi pāsāṇo vinā nāvāya udake uppilaveyyāā€ti. ā€œWhat do you think, your majesty, could even a small stone float on the water without a boat?ā€

ā€œNa hi, bhanteā€ti. ā€œCertainly not, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, mahārāja, vāhasatampi pāsāṇānaṁ nāvāya āropitaṁ udake uppilaveyyāā€ti? ā€œBut, your majesty, could even a load of a hundred stones loaded onto a boat float on the water?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhanteā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œYathā, mahārāja, nāvā, evaṁ kusalāni kammāni daį¹į¹habbānÄ«ā€ti. ā€œYour majesty, skilled deeds should be considered as like a boat.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
