8. KammaphalaatthibhāvapaƱha Question on the Existence of the Fruits of Actions

Rājā āha—The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, iminā nāmarÅ«pena kammaṁ kataṁ kusalaṁ vā akusalaṁ vā, kuhiṁ tāni kammāni tiį¹į¹hantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, for a wholesome or unwholesome action done by this name-and-form, where do those actions remain?ā€

ā€œAnubandheyyuṁ kho, mahārāja, tāni kammāni chāyāva anapāyinÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThose actions would follow one, your majesty, like a shadow that never leaves.ā€

ā€œSakkā pana, bhante, tāni kammāni dassetuṁ ā€˜idha vā idha vā tāni kammāni tiį¹į¹hantÄ«ā€™ā€ti? ā€œIs it then possible, venerable sir, to point to those actions and say they remain here or there?ā€

ā€œNa sakkā, mahārāja, tāni kammāni dassetuṁ ā€˜idha vā idha vā tāni kammāni tiį¹į¹hantÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œIt is not possible, your majesty, to point to those actions and say they remain here or there.ā€

ā€œOpammaṁ karohÄ«ā€ti. ā€œPlease give me an analogy.ā€

ā€œTaṁ kiṁ maƱƱasi, mahārāja, yānimāni rukkhāni anibbattaphalāni, sakkā tesaṁ phalāni dassetuṁ ā€˜idha vā idha vā tāni phalāni tiį¹į¹hantÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œWhat do you think, your majesty, for those trees where the fruit has not yet arisen, is it possible to point to those fruits and say those fruits remain here or there?ā€

ā€œNa hi, bhanteā€ti. ā€œCertainly not, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, mahārāja, abbocchinnāya santatiyā na sakkā tāni kammāni dassetuṁ ā€˜idha vā idha vā tāni kammāni tiį¹į¹hantÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œIn the same way, your majesty, as long as the continuity of life is not cut off, it is not possible to point to those actions and say they remain here or there.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
