7. PathavisandhārakapaƱha Question on the Bearing Up of the Earth

Rājā āha—The king said:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, tumhe bhaṇathaā€”ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, you say

ā€˜ayaṁ mahā pathavÄ« udake patiį¹į¹hitā, udakaṁ vāte patiį¹į¹hitaṁ, vāto ākāse patiį¹į¹hito’ti, etampi vacanaṁ na saddahāmÄ«ā€ti. this great earth is established on water, water is established on air, and air is established on space. I do not believe this assertion.ā€

Thero dhammakarakena udakaṁ gahetvā rājānaṁ milindaṁ saƱƱāpesi—The elder took some water in a water vessel and explained to King Milinda,

ā€œyathā, mahārāja, imaṁ udakaṁ vātena ādhāritaṁ, evaṁ tampi udakaṁ vātena ādhāritanā€ti. ā€œJust as, your majesty, this water is supported by the air, so too is that water supported by air.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
