RÄjÄ ÄhaāThe king asked:
ābhante nÄgasena, tvaį¹ pana paį¹isandahissasÄ«āti? āVenerable NÄgasena, will you then reconnect?ā
āAlaį¹, mahÄrÄja, kiį¹ te tena pucchitena, nanu mayÄ paį¹ikacceva akkhÄtaį¹ āsace, mahÄrÄja, saupÄdÄno bhavissÄmi, paį¹isandahissÄmi, sace anupÄdÄno bhavissÄmi, na paį¹isandahissÄmÄ«āāti. āEnough, your majesty, why are you asking this? Have I not declared to you previously, āIf, your majesty, I am with clinging I will reconnect, and if I am without clinging I will not reconnect?āā
āOpammaį¹ karohÄ«āti. āPlease give me an analogy.ā
āYathÄ, mahÄrÄja, kocideva puriso raƱƱo adhikÄraį¹ kareyya. āJust as, your majesty, some person or other might perform a service for the king,
RÄjÄ tuį¹į¹ho adhikÄraį¹ dadeyya, so tena adhikÄrena paƱcahi kÄmaguį¹ehi samappito samaį¹
gibhÅ«to paricareyya, so ce janassa Äroceyya āna me rÄjÄ kiƱci paį¹ikarotÄ«āti. and the king, satisfied, would repay that service. And that person, because of that service, would go about provided with and possessed of the five strands of sensual pleasure, and might announce to the populace, āThe king does not do anything for me.ā
Kiį¹ nu kho so, mahÄrÄja, puriso yuttakÄrÄ« bhaveyyÄāti? Would that man, your majesty, be acting rightly?ā
āNa hi, bhanteāti. āCertainly not, venerable sir.ā
āEvameva kho, mahÄrÄja, kiį¹ te tena pucchitena, nanu mayÄ paį¹ikacceva akkhÄtaį¹ āsace saupÄdÄno bhavissÄmi, paį¹isandahissÄmi, sace anupÄdÄno bhavissÄmi, na paį¹isandahissÄmÄ«āāti. āIn the same way, your majesty, why are you asking this? Have I not declared to you previously, āIf I am with clinging I will reconnect, and if I am without clinging I will not reconnect?āā
āKallosi, bhante nÄgasenÄāti. āYou are clever, venerable NÄgasena!ā
