2. Paṭisandahanapañha Reconnection Question

Rājā āha—The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, yo na paį¹isandahati, jānāti so ā€˜na paį¹isandahissāmÄ«ā€™ā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, does someone who does not reconnect know ā€˜I will not reconnect’?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, mahārāja, yo na paį¹isandahati, jānāti so ā€˜na paį¹isandahissāmÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œYes, your majesty, someone who does not reconnect knows ā€˜I will not reconnect’.ā€

ā€œKathaṁ, bhante, jānātÄ«ā€ti? ā€œHow do they know, venerable sir?ā€

ā€œYo hetu yo paccayo, mahārāja, paį¹isandahanāya, tassa hetussa tassa paccayassa uparamā jānāti so ā€˜na paį¹isandahissāmÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œFrom the cessation, your majesty, of the cause and condition for reconnecting one knows ā€˜I will not reconnect’.ā€

ā€œOpammaṁ karohÄ«ā€ti. ā€œPlease give me an analogy.ā€

ā€œYathā, mahārāja, kassako gahapatiko kasitvā ca vapitvā ca dhaƱƱāgāraṁ paripÅ«reyya. ā€œJust like, your majesty, a householder farmer, having ploughed and sown might fill his grain house.

So aparena samayena neva kasseyya na vappeyya, yathāsambhataƱca dhaƱƱaṁ paribhuƱjeyya vā visajjeyya vā yathā paccayaṁ vā kareyya, jāneyya so, mahārāja, kassako gahapatiko ā€˜na me dhaƱƱāgāraṁ paripÅ«ressatÄ«ā€™ā€ti? But then, after some time, he would not plough and sow, and would use up the grain he had stored, or dispose of it, or deal with it according to conditions, would that householder farmer know, your majesty, ā€˜I will not fill my grain house’?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, jāneyyāā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, he would know.ā€

ā€œKathaṁ jāneyyāā€ti? ā€œHow would he know?ā€

ā€œYo hetu yo paccayo dhaƱƱāgārassa paripÅ«raṇāya, tassa hetussa tassa paccayassa uparamā jānāti ā€˜na me dhaƱƱāgāraṁ paripÅ«ressatÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œFrom the cessation of that cause and condition for filling the grain house one knows ā€˜I will not fill my grain house’.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, mahārāja, yo hetu yo paccayo paį¹isandahanāya, tassa hetussa tassa paccayassa uparamā jānāti so ā€˜na paį¹isandahissāmÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œIn the same way, your majesty, from the cessation of the cause and condition for reconnecting one knows ā€˜I will not reconnect’.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena!ā€
