Brāhmaṇadhammayāgavagga The Chapter on the Brahmin’s Offering of the Teaching

Bahukārasutta Very Helpful

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œBahukārā, bhikkhave, brāhmaṇagahapatikā tumhākaṁ ye vo paccupaį¹į¹hitā cÄ«varapiį¹‡įøapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārehi. ā€œMendicants, brahmins and householders are very helpful to you, as they provide you with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.

Tumhepi, bhikkhave, bahukārā brāhmaṇagahapatikānaṁ yaṁ nesaṁ dhammaṁ desetha ādikalyāṇaṁ majjhekalyāṇaṁ pariyosānakalyāṇaṁ sātthaṁ sabyaƱjanaṁ, kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ pakāsetha. And you are very helpful to brahmins and householders, as you teach them the Dhamma that’s good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And you reveal a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure.

Evamidaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱamaƱƱaṁ nissāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati oghassa nittharaṇatthāya sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāyāā€ti. That is how this spiritual path is lived supporting each other in order to cross over the flood and make a complete end of suffering.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSāgārā anagārā ca, ā€œThe home-dweller and the homeless,

ubho aƱƱoƱƱanissitā; supporting each other,

Ārādhayanti saddhammaṁ, find success in the true teaching,

yogakkhemaṁ anuttaraṁ. the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Sāgāresu ca cīvaraṁ, The homeless receive requisites

paccayaṁ sayanāsanaṁ; from the home-dwellers:

Anagārā paṭicchanti, robes and lodgings

parissayavinodanaṁ. to shelter from harsh conditions.

Sugataṁ pana nissāya, Relying on the Holy One,

gahaṭṭhā gharamesino; layfolk and householders of discernment

Saddahānā arahataṁ, place faith in the perfected ones,

ariyapaƱƱāya jhāyino. meditators of noble wisdom.

Idha dhammaṁ caritvāna, Having practiced the teaching here,

maggaṁ sugatigāminaṁ; the path that goes to a good place,

Nandino devalokasmiṁ, they delight in the heavenly realm,

modanti kāmakāminoā€ti. enjoying all the pleasures they desire.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Aṭṭhamaṁ.
