Brāhmaṇadhammayāgavagga The Chapter on the Brahmin’s Offering of the Teaching

Sīlasampannasutta Accomplished in Ethics

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œYe te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sÄ«lasampannā samādhisampannā paƱƱāsampannā vimuttisampannā vimuttiñāṇadassanasampannā ovādakā viƱƱāpakā sandassakā samādapakā samuttejakā sampahaṁsakā alaṁsamakkhātāro saddhammassa dassanampahaṁ, bhikkhave, tesaṁ bhikkhÅ«naṁ bahÅ«pakāraṁ vadāmi; ā€œMendicants, take a mendicant who is accomplished in ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and the knowledge and vision of freedom. They advise and instruct. They educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire, and can rightly explain the true teaching. Even the sight of those mendicants is very helpful, I say.

savanampahaṁ, bhikkhave, tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ bahūpakāraṁ vadāmi; Even to hear them,

upasaį¹…kamanampahaṁ, bhikkhave, tesaṁ bhikkhÅ«naṁ bahÅ«pakāraṁ vadāmi; approach them,

payirupāsanampahaṁ, bhikkhave, tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ bahūpakāraṁ vadāmi; pay homage to them,

anussaraṇampahaṁ, bhikkhave, tesaṁ bhikkhÅ«naṁ bahÅ«pakāraṁ vadāmi; recollect them,

anupabbajjampahaṁ, bhikkhave, tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ bahūpakāraṁ vadāmi. or go forth after them is very helpful, I say.

Taṁ kissa hetu? Why is that?

TathārÅ«pe, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sevato bhajato payirupāsato aparipÅ«ropi sÄ«lakkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi samādhikkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi paƱƱākkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi vimuttikkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchati. For one who frequents and associates with such mendicants, their incomplete spectrum of ethics is completed. Their incomplete spectrum of immersion … wisdom … freedom … knowledge and vision of freedom is completed.

EvarÅ«pā ca te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« satthārotipi vuccanti, satthavāhātipi vuccanti, raṇaƱjahātipi vuccanti, tamonudātipi vuccanti, ālokakarātipi vuccanti, obhāsakarātipi vuccanti, pajjotakarātipi vuccanti, ukkādhārātipi vuccanti, pabhaį¹…karātipi vuccanti, ariyātipi vuccanti, cakkhumantotipi vuccantÄ«ā€ti. Such mendicants are called ā€˜teachers’, ā€˜caravan leaders’, ā€˜strife-discarders’, ā€˜dispellers of darkness’, ā€˜bringers of light’, ā€˜luminaries’, ā€˜lamps’, ā€˜candlebearers’, ā€˜beacons’, ā€˜noble ones’, and ā€˜clear-eyed ones’.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œPāmojjakaraṇaṁ į¹hānaṁ, ā€œThis is a reason for joy

etaṁ hoti vijānataṁ; for those who understand:

Yadidaṁ bhāvitattānaṁ, that is, those who are evolved,

ariyānaṁ dhammajīvinaṁ. the noble ones living righteously.

Te jotayanti saddhammaṁ, They illuminate the true teaching,

bhāsayanti pabhaį¹…karā; beacons beaming light,

Ālokakaraṇā dhÄ«rā, the attentive ones bringing light,

cakkhumanto raṇaƱjahā. clear-eyed ones with strife discarded.

Yesaṁ ve sāsanaṁ sutvā, Having heard their instruction,

sammadaƱƱāya paį¹‡įøitā; the astute, understanding rightly,

JātikkhayamabhiƱƱāya, directly know the ending of rebirth,

nāgacchanti punabbhavanā€ti. they come not back to future lives.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Pañcamaṁ.
