KalyÄį¹asÄ«lasutta Good Morals
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āKalyÄį¹asÄ«lo, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyÄį¹adhammo kalyÄį¹apaƱƱo imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye ākevalÄ« vusitavÄ uttamapurisoāti vuccatiāāMendicants, in this teaching and training a mendicant of good morals, good practice, and good wisdom is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyÄį¹asÄ«lo hoti? And how does a mendicant have good morals?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavÄ hoti, pÄtimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati, ÄcÄragocarasampanno aį¹umattesu vajjesu bhayadassÄvÄ«, samÄdÄya sikkhati sikkhÄpadesu. Itās when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyāve undertaken.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyÄį¹asÄ«lo hoti. Thatās how a mendicant has good morals.
Iti kalyÄį¹asÄ«lo. Such is one of good morality.
KalyÄį¹adhammo ca kathaį¹ hoti? And how does one have good practice?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sattannaį¹ bodhipakkhiyÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ bhÄvanÄnuyogamanuyutto viharati. Itās when a mendicant meditates pursuing the development of the seven qualities that lead to awakening.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyÄį¹adhammo hoti. Thatās how a mendicant has good practice.
Iti kalyÄį¹asÄ«lo, kalyÄį¹adhammo. Such is one of good morality and good practice.
KalyÄį¹apaƱƱo ca kathaį¹ hoti? And how does one have good wisdom?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. Itās when a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kalyÄį¹apaƱƱo hoti. Thatās how a mendicant has good wisdom;
Iti kalyÄį¹asÄ«lo kalyÄį¹adhammo kalyÄį¹apaƱƱo imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye ākevalÄ« vusitavÄ uttamapurisoāti vuccatÄ«āti. Such is one of good morals, good practice, and good wisdom, who in this teaching and training is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

āYassa kÄyena vÄcÄya, āWho does nothing wrong
manasÄ natthi dukkaį¹aį¹; by body, speech or mind,
Taį¹ ve kalyÄį¹asÄ«loti, is said to be one of good morals,
Ähu bhikkhuį¹ hirÄ«manaį¹. a conscientious mendicant.
Yassa dhammÄ subhÄvitÄ, Who has well developed the seven
satta sambodhigÄmino; factors that lead to awakening
Taį¹ ve kalyÄį¹adhammoti, is said to be one good practice,
Ähu bhikkhuį¹ anussadaį¹. an unpretentious mendicant.
Yo dukkhassa pajÄnÄti, Who understands for themselves
idheva khayamattano; the end of suffering in this life
Taį¹ ve kalyÄį¹apaƱƱoti, is said to be one good wisdom,
Ähu bhikkhuį¹ anÄsavaį¹. an undefiled mendicant.
Tehi dhammehi sampannaį¹, One accomplished in these three things,
anÄ«ghaį¹ chinnasaį¹sayaį¹; untroubled, with doubts cut off,
Asitaį¹ sabbalokassa, unattached to anything in the world,
Ähu sabbapahÄyinanāti. has given up everything, they say.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
