Upaparikkhasutta Examination
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTathÄ tathÄ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu upaparikkheyya yathÄ yathÄssa upaparikkhato bahiddhÄ cassa viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ avikkhittaį¹ avisaį¹aį¹ ajjhattaį¹ asaį¹į¹hitaį¹ anupÄdÄya na paritasseyya. āMendicants, a mendicant should examine in any such a way that their consciousness is neither scattered and diffused externally nor stuck internally, and they are not anxious because of grasping.
BahiddhÄ, bhikkhave, viƱƱÄį¹e avikkhitte avisaį¹e sati ajjhattaį¹ asaį¹į¹hite anupÄdÄya aparitassato Äyatiį¹ jÄtijarÄmaraį¹adukkhasamudayasambhavo na hotÄ«āti. When this is the case and they are no longer anxious, there is for them no coming to be of the origin of sufferingāof rebirth, old age, and death in the future.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āSattasaį¹
gappahÄ«nassa, āFor one who has given up seven chains,
netticchinnassa bhikkhuno; a mendicant who has cut the cord,
VikkhÄ«į¹o jÄtisaį¹sÄro, transmigration through births is finished,
natthi tassa punabbhavoāti. thereāll be no more no more future lives for them.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
