Tikanipāta The Book of the Threes

Catutthavagga Chapter Four

Sakkārasutta Esteem

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDiį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā. ā€œI’ve seen, mendicants, sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā asakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā. I’ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā. I’ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Taṁ kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, nāƱƱassa samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā sutvā vadāmi; Now, I don’t say this because I’ve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin.

(…) api ca, bhikkhave, yadeva me sāmaṁ Ʊātaṁ sāmaṁ diį¹į¹haṁ sāmaṁ viditaṁ tamevāhaṁ vadāmi. I only say it because I’ve known, seen, and realized it for myself.ā€

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā asakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannāā€ti.

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa sakkariyamānassa, ā€œWhether they’re honored

asakkārena cūbhayaṁ; or not honored, or both,

Samādhi na vikampati, their immersion doesn’t waver

appamādavihārino. as they live diligently.

Taṁ jhāyinaṁ sātatikaṁ, They persistently practice absorption

sukhumadiṭṭhivipassakaṁ; with subtle view and discernment.

Upādānakkhayārāmaṁ, Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,

āhu sappuriso itÄ«ā€ti. they’re said to be a true person.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Dutiyaṁ.
