Vitakkasutta Thoughts
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTayome, bhikkhave, akusalavitakkÄ. āMendicants, there are these three unskillful thoughts.
Katame tayo? What three?
AnavaƱƱattipaį¹isaį¹yutto vitakko, lÄbhasakkÄrasilokapaį¹isaį¹yutto vitakko, parÄnuddayatÄpaį¹isaį¹yutto vitakko. The thought of status; of getting material things, honor, and popularity; and of fondness for others.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo akusalavitakkÄāti. These are the three unskillful thoughts.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āAnavaƱƱattisaį¹yutto, āOne concerned with being looked up to,
lÄbhasakkÄragÄravo; with possessions, honor, and respect,
Sahanandī amaccehi, with sharing joys with friends,
ÄrÄ saį¹yojanakkhayÄ. is far from the ending of fetters.
Yo ca puttapasuį¹ hitvÄ, But one who gives up children and herds,
VivÄhe saį¹harÄni ca; marriage and acquisitionsā
Bhabbo so tÄdiso bhikkhu, such a mendicant is capable
Phuį¹į¹huį¹ sambodhimuttamanāti. of experiencing the highest awakening.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
