Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Dutiyarāgasutta Greed (2nd)

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œYassa kassaci, bhikkhave, bhikkhussa vā bhikkhuniyā vā rāgo appahÄ«no, doso appahÄ«no, moho appahÄ«noā€”ā€œWhoever has not given up greed, hate, and delusion

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ā€˜atiṇṇo samuddaṁ saÅ«miṁ savÄ«ciṁ sāvaį¹­į¹­aṁ sagahaṁ sarakkhasaṁ’. is said to have not crossed over the ocean with its waves and whirlpools, its saltwater crocodiles and monsters.

Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, bhikkhussa vā bhikkhuniyā vā rāgo pahÄ«no, doso pahÄ«no, moho pahÄ«no—Whoever has given up greed, hate, and delusion

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ā€˜atari samuddaṁ saÅ«miṁ savÄ«ciṁ sāvaį¹­į¹­aṁ sagahaṁ sarakkhasaṁ, tiṇṇo pāraį¹…gato thale tiį¹­į¹­hati brāhmaṇoā€™ā€ti. is said to have crossed over the ocean with its waves and whirlpools, its saltwater crocodiles and monsters. Crossed over and gone beyond, that brahmin stands on the shore.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa rāgo ca doso ca, ā€œThose in whom greed, hate, and ignorance

Avijjā ca virājitā; have faded away,

Somaṁ samuddaṁ sagahaṁ sarakkhasaṁ, have crossed the ocean so hard to cross,

Saūmibhayaṁ duttaraṁ accatāri. with its saltwater crocodiles and monsters, its waves and dangers.

Saį¹…gātigo maccujaho nirÅ«padhi, They’ve slipped their snares, given up death, and have no attachments.

Pahāsi dukkhaṁ apunabbhavāya; They’ve given up suffering, so there are no more future lives.

Atthaį¹…gato so na pamāṇameti, They’ve come to an end and cannot be defined;

Amohayi maccurājanti brÅ«mÄ«ā€ti. they’ve confounded the King of Death, I say.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Dasamaṁ.

Dutiyo vaggo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Puññaṁ cakkhu atha indriyāni,

Addhā ca caritaṁ duve soci;

Muno atha rāgaduve,

Puna vaggamāhu dutiyamuttamanti.
