Paṭhamarāgasutta Greed (1st)

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œYassa kassaci, bhikkhave, rāgo appahÄ«no, doso appahÄ«no, moho appahÄ«noā€”ā€œWhoever has not given up greed, hate, and delusion

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ā€˜baddho mārassa paį¹­imukkassa mārapāso yathākāmakaraṇīyo pāpimato’. is said to be trapped. They’re caught in Māra’s snare, and the Wicked One can do with them what he wants.

Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, rāgo pahÄ«no, doso pahÄ«no, moho pahÄ«no—Whoever has given up greed, hate, and delusion

ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ā€˜abaddho mārassa omukkassa mārapāso na yathākāmakaraṇīyo pāpimatoā€™ā€ti. is said to be free. They’re released from Māra’s snare, and the Wicked One cannot do with them what he wants.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa rāgo ca doso ca, ā€œThose in whom greed, hate, and ignorance

avijjā ca virājitā; have faded away,

Taṁ bhāvitattaññataraṁ, belong with those who are evolved;

brahmabhūtaṁ tathāgataṁ; A manifestation of divinity, realized,

Buddhaṁ verabhayātītaṁ, awakened, beyond enmity and fear,

āhu sabbappahāyinanā€ti. they’ve given up everything, they say.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
