Tikanipāta The Book of the Threes

Paį¹hamavagga Chapter One

Dutiyaāsavasutta Defilements (2nd)

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, āsavā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three defilements.

Katame tayo? What three?

Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo—The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavāā€ti. These are the three defilements.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa kāmāsavo khīṇo, ā€œOne who has ended the defilement of sensuality,

avijjā ca virājitā; whose ignorance has faded away,

Bhavāsavo parikkhīṇo, and whose desire to be reborn is finished—

vippamutto nirūpadhi; liberated, free of attachments,

Dhāreti antimaṁ dehaṁ, they bear their final body,

jetvā māraṁ savāhininā€ti. having vanquished Māra and his mount.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Aṭṭhamaṁ.
