Paį¹­hamavagga Chapter One

Paṭhamaāsavasutta Defilements (1st)

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, āsavā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three defilements.

Katame tayo? What three?

Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo—The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavÄā€ti. These are the three defilements.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSamāhito sampajāno, ā€œStilled, aware,

sato buddhassa sāvako; a mindful disciple of the Buddha

Āsave ca pajānāti, understands defilements,

āsavānañca sambhavaṁ. the cause of defilements,

Yattha cetā nirujjhanti, where they cease,

maggañca khayagāminaṁ; and the path that leads to their ending.

Āsavānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, With the ending of defilements, a mendicant

nicchāto parinibbutoā€ti. is hungerless, quenched.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
