Paį¹­hamavagga Chapter One

Paṭhamavedanāsutta Feelings (1st)

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, vedanā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three feelings.

Katamā tisso? What three?

Sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā—Pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling.

imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso vedanÄā€ti. These are the three feelings.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSamāhito sampajāno, ā€œStilled, aware,

sato buddhassa sāvako; a mindful disciple of the Buddha

Vedanā ca pajānāti, understands feelings,

vedanānañca sambhavaṁ. the cause of feelings,

Yattha cetā nirujjhanti, where they cease,

maggañca khayagāminaṁ; and the path that leads to their ending.

Vedanānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, With the ending of feelings, a mendicant

nicchāto parinibbutoā€ti. is hungerless, quenched.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
