Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Sikkhānisaṁsasutta The Benefits of Training

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œSikkhānisaṁsā, bhikkhave, viharatha paƱƱuttarā vimuttisārā satādhipateyyā. ā€œMendicants, live with training as benefit, with wisdom as overseer, with freedom as core, and with mindfulness as ruler.

Sikkhānisaṁsānaṁ, bhikkhave, viharataṁ paƱƱuttarānaṁ vimuttisārānaṁ satādhipateyyānaṁ dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aƱƱataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaį¹…khaṁ—A mendicant who lives in this way can expect one of two results:

diį¹į¹heva dhamme aƱƱā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitāā€ti. enlightenment in this very life, or if there’s something left over, non-return.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œParipuṇṇasikkhaṁ apahānadhammaṁ, ā€œThe training fulfilled, not liable to decline,

PaƱƱuttaraṁ jātikhayantadassiṁ; overseen by wisdom, seer of rebirth’s end;

Taṁ ve muniṁ antimadehadhāriṁ, that sage bears their final body;

Mārañjahaṁ brūmi jarāya pāraguṁ. they have disposed of Māra, I declare, and gone beyond old age.

Tasmā sadā jhānaratā samāhitā, Therefore be always enjoying absorption, immersed in samādhi,

Ātāpino jātikhayantadassino; energetic, seers of rebirth’s end.

Māraṁ sasenaṁ abhibhuyya bhikkhavo, Having overcome Māra and his armies, mendicants,

Bhavatha jātimaraṇassa pāragāā€ti. go beyond birth and death.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Navamaṁ.
